Wuss! At least Joe's got a legitimate excuse - fixing stuff around the house scores you points with the house executive, lets you out of the dog house, etc. Riding up to Onyx is nothing more than unusually cruel and inhumane punishment. Anyway, if you change your mind, you know where to find us.

Is the route in post 1 the "official" route? I would love the opportunity to join in and meet some new people. I like to bring the route sheet with me on the ride, so just wondering if that is it, or if it's different.

There were over 20 of us at the start, sorry you missed it!

The group did a good job of waiting up for the slower riders (I am decidedly hill-challenged ).

My only issue was with the 2-hour drive home in weekend traffic. I propose that the next ride be scheduled around the Metrolink timetable.

i did some more riding after arriving back at the train station and left there about 5:15pm. traffic was bad from oceanside to del mar for me but sounds like you
hit an accident or two.

and yes...a big thank you to JimmyNH for organizing, showing us some beautiful, buttery roads and for being the consummate host.

also, much thanks to the two gents from the brethren club group that shepherded a handful of us from the pelican hill area back to the
irvine train station area. very appreciated! had a great ride and always nice to meet a few forumites.

Thanks ooga-booga I forgot to mention that the scenery was beautiful and the roads and bike lanes were in great shape.

Ooga-booga, we heard at the pizza place you were going to ride another 30 miles or more to complete the century

tunavic, if you were one of the shepherds-thanks!

i ended doing an extra 33 miles from the train station to the newport back bay area (had been wanting to ride that for a long time)
and back pretty much the same way. wanted to ride pch south from fashion island back to the 133 but decided on the boring but safer
same way back via bike paths and deserted roads. pch and the 133 was the only significant traffic we saw the whole ride. next time.

hit the corner of sand canyon/barranca on the way to the back bay and almost turned left to hit the pizza place and
commiserate/tell old war stories but i felt the need to abuse myself with more miles instead since it had been 2 months w/o
a century for me. hope the pizza was spicy and the beers icy!!

No accidents, just slow traffic from Capistrano south. I decided to skip the pizza and left just after 2 pm thinking I'd make it home in an hour. I would have been better off staying the extra hour for pizza and hitting less traffic on the drive home.

Thanks to Jimmy for organizing this, and I second the thanks to the Brethren cyclists for leading the way on the route back to the station.

Man, I'm bummed I missed the ride... my son's soccer team got shellacked - I lost track but it felt like 44-0. This is soccer remember, land of the 1-0 win. Later on, USC choked on it's vomit but managed to eke out a win over a seriously overmatched lower-echelon conference opponent and then my car was DEAD when we got back to it.

Next time I'll bring my son and sell my tickets. Ha ha.

Looked like a great ride, sorry I missed it. Wedding I went to was ok, but wife loved it-it was a three kleenex wedding. At least I got to pick up my N+1-1 that morning (Traded my aluminum bike for it.) Decided on steel instead of CF.

Now you see why I Metrolink during the week. Wife once asked me to drive on a Friday that we were meeting people in C'bad that eavining. The Metrolink I would have been on passed me while I was parked on I5 in Capistrano. Though when the train is delayed, it makes a freeway snarl look like nothing. Once there was a guy threatening to jump off the tollroad overpass onto the tracks at Laguna Nigel. We could see him from the station. It totaly stopped the trains in both directions until they finaly talked the guy down at 4:00 AM the next morning. At least stuff like that does't happen every Friday.

Thanks everybody for joining the ride! I had hell of a good time. It was so cool to see Cbad, GP and Greg the Legend (I got it right this time, Beanz!). It was also cool to meet ooga-booga (I can't believe he went for more after the "official" finish) and Elvo. Both are very strong riders, so if you ride with them, be prepared to have your arse kicked. Tunavic also put up a good performance given that the guy took up cycling only about 6 months ago. I see your moving time was under 5 hrs for the 68 miles. My first metric century took me about 6 hrs (well, I had a crappy bike but I was in my 20s).
Here are some pics.

BTW Rick, how was Onyx? Hope the company and the beer were as good as we had it!

Some more pics. I don't think I have a picture of ooga-booga, but with the "blind" camera I missed quite a few shots.

Either that or Palomar. Last two attempts to organize it fizzled because it was respectively 40 F and 90 F at the start. We should have a month or two of OK weather coming up.
