Feel free to join us for any part of the ride, or even meet up at the end for pizza.

I have also had trouble mapping rides near Laguna Canyon Road and Lake Forest. Using RideWithGPS, I switched from "Optimize for Cycling" to "Optimize for Driving", and the problem went away. In general, I find RWGPS works better when optimized for driving, except when you specifically want to go on a MUP.

Yeah, join us for the first however far you feel like going. Or pizza. if you feel like doing 21 miles, that would encompass the whole 84 road race course (which is that first loop looking thing around lake mission viejo) and head back.

The route looks just about right. An option that does not change the route hardly at all is to get back on the Peters Cyn Trail at Barranca, which will bypass traffic signals at Alton, San Marino, San Carlo, Main and Michelson then dumps you back on Harvard before University.

Welcome Kensic, glad you can join us. Just a suggestion if you don't feel like riding too long: start with us and ride to Vista Del Lago, but instead of turning up Vista Del Lago, keep going up Los Alisos, make a left on Marguerite (after crossing Santa Margarita Pkwy), then right on El Toro/Santiago Canyon. This will give you a comfortable head start so you can ride through Santiago Canyon and then wait for us at Pete's for coffee. This will give you about 25-26 miles, but it will avoid the hardest section of the route (the 1984 road race loop). Getting back to the Irvine train station from Pete's is easy. Just an idea, you decide.

Just for the heck of it, I mapped out if I parked at oside train station and rode up to Marguerite n Avery is 40 miles. How is the San juan bike trail that goes from Dana point up?

O-B, glad you can make it, you're the instigator after all.
BTW, I saw GP on the road today and he committed to the ride too (and I've got witnesses). Let's see if CalamariChris will be up to the challenge. I wonder what's happening with him, usually he doesn't miss rides that involve beer.

Dammit, I'm OUT.
Stupid soccer. Sorry. I hope we get another one of these things going later so I can enjoy a refreshing beverage in the company of other cyclists.

I'm in, but no guarantees I'll make it past Peets. Still building strength after a March crash put me out of commission.
Awesome loop. I've done many of these climbs in combination with one another, but never this complete list at once. I'm betting it's 5K feet of climbing, though.

If I have to make an uneducated guess - we'd average around 15 mph over the entire route. I did a big part of this loop solo about 3 months ago and I averaged just under 15 mph. And I'm an average recreational weekender. As I said earlier - feel free to ride as much as you want. We can make a plan at the start and maybe split in 2 groups (faster and slower), depending on who shows up.

I volunteer to be the designated boat anchor who will be lagging behind everyone else. I've always had more endurance than speed.

I'm OK with Carpooling, but it looks like jsigone, GP and Cbad may be a full car unless you can get four people and four bikes in a Prius.

As far as the Laguna Beach detour, I have only ridden it once. The ride up to the turn at Brodway, the car traffic was so thick that the cars were doing bike speed or slower. There was one guy in an SUV that was as thick as the traffic, but I guess I can handle that.
Start from the Irvine train station (15215 Barranca Pkwy, Irvine, CA 92618).
(L) on Barranca/Muirlands
(L) Los Alisos
(R) Vista del Lago
(R) Marguerite
(L) La Paz (regroup on top of La Paz)
(L) Olympiad
(R) Marguerite
(R) El Toro/Santiago Canyon (regroup on top, about 2 miles from Cook's corner)
(L) Jamboree
(L) Portola
Coffee stop at Pete's Coffee and Tea (cnr. Portola and Culver) about 35 miles into the ride.
(L) on Culver (delete)
(R) Irvine Blvd (delete)
(R) Portola (backtrack)
(L) Crosswalk to Peters Canyon Wash Trail entrance (press the button)
(L) Peters Canyon Wash Trail
(R) Harvard
(R) San Diego Creek Bikeway(At Barranca)-Becomes Peters Canyon Trail (mi 40.2)
(L) Exit Peters Canyon Path (mi 42.3)
(R) Harvard (mi 42.3)
(R) Berkley Ave/E Peltason Dr
(L) Anteater
(R) Bonita Canyon
(L) Turtle Ridge (delete, we can start at the bottom of NPC, not have to deal with the slow light at Turtle Ridge, and have a continuous climb)
(L) Newport Coast (regroup on top just before Pelican Hill)
(L) PCH
Coffee stop at the Crystal Cove Starbucks (7958 Pacific Coast Highway, Newport Beach, CA 92657) about 53 miles into the ride (and just about 1 mile after the turn on PCH - make a left on Crystal Heights(traffic light), then first right into shopping center)
(L) PCH
(L) Cliff
(L) Laguna Canyon CA-133 (regroup at Laguna Canyon and Lake Forest Dr)
After Lake Forest Dr go to the next traffic light (Pavona St??) and very carefully make a left turn to stay on Laguna Canyon Rd.
Cross over I-405
(R) Barranca
(L) into the Irvine train station parking lot

I still appreciate your help designing the route. Thanks!
As for Laguna Canyon - it's got a wide shoulder after the CA-73 so I wouldn't worry too much about it. But we must be careful when making that left turn at the end. Maybe just do the "sissy turn", i.e. cross Pavona and then use the pedestrian crossing.

Would have liked to join you Jimmy but I'll be riding up in Big Bear on that day, trying to make Onyx look like an insignificant climb!
