My condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Deem.
The roadways approaching that intersection are pretty wide, enough room for all to manuever safely even with vehicles going 50 mph. There must be more to this than is mentioned in the article. The article also mentions Ms. leaf's death at PCH and Bayside a few months ago; that was also a wide intersection.
Reading this today, after just driving this yesterday evening scouting out a route to ride. Was really looking forward to riding it, now not so much so.
The issue is most likely related to the "freeway" like exits from PCH onto Newport Coast Drive.
It appears Ms Deem was traveling north on PCH and was likely continuing straight (continuing northbound) and thus had to negotiate from the bike lane/shoulder across the right turn exit lane that turns onto NCD w/o requiring motor vehicles slowing down or stopping...and likely the vehicle that hit her was taking that to head up NCD.
Those are my opinions as to what may have occurred based on various reports.
IMO it is safer to do the climb up NPC than to not only brave going straight through the intersection but also having to deal with northbound traffic in CDM
Once again, one of the saddest things here is the string of the arrogant comments by self-important "motoring advocates" like @robin.
As much as you paid for that Beemer [Mercedies, Audi, Escalade], I'm surprised it didn't come equipped with turn signals.
Passed by this last night and saw the bike in memory there. Was there ever more info given on what happened?
In LA County we lose on average maybe one cyclist per year on PCH. Seems even worse in OC.

Just adding my 2 cents... I noticed two things in the article that immediately stood out to me as a problem... one) a week day ride and two) at 4:27 pm; at the beginning of "rush hour"... because I really don't want to read about these stories anymore and I don't want any of the BF friends hurt... just remember if riding during the week during rush hour - TAKE EXTRA CAUTION! After working all day and now thinking about the drive home and 1) what the wife is going to make me do, 2) what the kids need help with, 3) the mess the dog made during the day 4) getting dinner on, 5) what a jerk the boss is, 6) the lack of sleep I got last night... whatever... last thing most drivers are thinking about is a cyclist... automatically assume (not assume KNOW) the driver does not see you and ride accordingly. I know it's a beautiful place to ride but maybe PCH during the week is not a good idea. Even with laws on the books about cell phone use, etc, drivers are distracted, careless, clueless.. take percautions, stay safe.
Generally for me, I either mountain bike during hte week or stick to bike trails especially at rush hour. So very tragic and sad...

^Yeah, PCH is a terrible place to ride during weekday rush hours.
It is just not about malicious drivers, but that many drivers don't understand that cyclists can be riding at a good clip, thus thinking they can make that corner before the cyclist. I have been riding for a while, but easily 80% or more of my close encounters were on PCH. It ranged from drivers getting too close to me (one elderly man once lightly brushed me with his car, sprinted up to him at the next light, and the man was probably on the short end of four feet in height and straining to see the road),to potential right hooks.
So be careful out there on PCH. Such a beautiful place to ride, but can be very dangerous.
