    Thanks guys!!

My top 5 choices in order are:
    1. Culver City
    2. Pasadena
    3. Westwood
    4. Long Beach
    5. Redondo Beach

Going to watch the traffic today to see what each commute would be like, I'll also be in town pretty soon so I can drive there and experience the pain firsthand.
I would still consider Irvine, Tustin, or Costa Mesa. They put you 10-15 miles of good bike laned streets to hills, and the drive to LB on the 405 ain't pretty, but it isn't that long either.
As much as you paid for that Beemer [Mercedies, Audi, Escalade], I'm surprised it didn't come equipped with turn signals.

Metrolink will get you to downtown (Union Station) pretty efficiently although it isn't cheap.

But getting from Downtown to Long Beach on public transit is going to be a challenge.

The entire trip (Northridge/Union Station/Long Beach) will be 2.5 hours at least... and the same or worse on the way home. Of course driving won't be a whole lot faster given the traffic, as other posters have pointed out.

You can play with this using google maps and see the alternatives.

Good luck; I concur that getting a place in PV would be your best bet if you can find a place that you like within your budget.

My experience is that public transit is slower in the AM than driving, and anywhere from a little faster to a lot faster in the afternoon. The exception is the occasional sad occurance of suicide by train, which makes the freeways look like heaven. (averaging one a year since I've been doing this.)

Thanks gents! I am planning a trial run next week before I start!

I have a place to stay in North Hollywood so I might try the commute from there too.
