Where are you riding 11/23-24/14

Might as well get this started early.
I am looking for someone to struggle with me on GMR / GRR this coming weekend Saturday or Sunday (preferably from Fontana, or meet up somewhere on the way)? I have been riding but nothing over 35 miles and I would like to try out the compact on the steeper grades. Lytle Creek is very nice but I want to try a longer ride. And since my accident happened on the way over there (Glendora) I would like to ride with someone. Total should be close to 65 miles and 5000ft.

jsigone 11-18-13 02:22 PM

would love to ride up GMR, but need to stay with my local hills.

Thinking of doing some thing along the lines of this route on Sunday pending weather http://www.strava.com/activities/95485593 some (14mi) dirt/gravel road action in there as well on Black Canyon

ooga-booga 11-18-13 02:42 PM

^every road up into the volcan mountains is dirt, aren't they? any doable ones on a road bike with 700x23 tires?

still recovering from a little wipeout that reactivated a 4 years dormant back injury. will probably just hit cabrillo natl monument and back for <30 miles to test the back out.

jsigone 11-18-13 05:20 PM

I've never gone up to Volcan Mt before, looks fun though. I'm on 25c tubeless tires, same setup I abused for the LA Rapha Gents race 2 weeks ago. That had 31miles of broken pavement/rocks/deep sand/$hit that roadies shouldn't be on type stuff forest road, not to mention 6-20% grades & climb up 6k ft vertical  Allot of the guys in the "race" was on 25 or 28c gatoskin hardshells. Some got lucky with 0 flats, some got 3+...all depends on your line and luck

Black Canyon should be doable on 23c gatorskins if dry, its a county graded road. Put a 25/28 on the rear if you can....I want to stuff 28c on my supersix for my next set of tires :roflmao2:

Update from Karen on the Climbfest:

Karen Johnson Ok.....I seriously don't want to FREEZE coming down from Dawson's Saddle.

How would you all feel about a route change? Still starting at Encanto Park...but climbing big GMR, descending little GMR, East Fork then on up to Crystal Lake and back down?

Or doing Crystal Lake first, then doing little GMR...down Big GMR.

Sounds tempting but 48 coming down will still be dam cold, also chance of snow showers at 8000ft. I am considering hiking on Saturday instead to San J or Telegraph peak maybe ride on Sunday. But I am flexible, is this a Facebook event, I couldn't find it.

Yes, it is a facebook event but you may have to be friends with Karen Johnson to see it . . . not sure how that works.

But since I am facebook friends with Karen I was able to see it as soon as it was posted. See if you can view it here:

I was supposed to play hooky from work and do a pie ride to Julian today. The rain caused it to be cancelled. :(

With the rain this week, I'm hoping the loose dirt will be replaced by hero dirt out at CHSP. Should be some nice muddy creek crossings. A muddy mountain bike is a happy mountain bike.

Sorry you had to miss a ride to Julian. Gotta love  the pie there!

I rode to work in the rain but at least it wasn't down-pour type. The ride home was dry but cooler than usual.

I need to get out to ride the Anza Borrego loop soon! We stop for pie in Santa Ysabelle and in Julian on that ride!

Now I can't stop thinking about apple pie.

Rode out through Escondido and Valley Center. The rain stopped and the weather ended up being pretty nice.

Elvo 11-24-13 12:30 AM

Did a brethren ride through anaheim hills and orange. Lots of crap on the road - people were getting multiple flats.

I finally got out of the house and rode down to the inlaws..., part of it on SART. I guess there hasn't been enough head wind in my life - took care of that in spades today. :)

I rode through what could only be described as a puddle of glass too. I stopped and checked the tires and they were fine but I was pretty nervous.

Genaro 11-25-13 10:27 AM

I ended up riding the upper Sart. 40 miles from Norco to Sanberdoo and back. I got a tough headwind all the way to SB. The way back was nice though..

I rode from Encanto Park in Duarte up the SGRT to where it intersects with Hwy 39; then up 39 to the barricade. By this time it was 38 Deg.F and getting colder.

I pushed on, around and through rock debris fields, around and over little patches of snow . . . finally stopped by a road covered with snow and a temperature reading of 32 Deg.F. Here's what it looked like:

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=352525I turned back, descended to Crystal Lake Cafe for lunch (it was snowing), then down the East Fork and Camp Williams (it was raining), up Little GMR and down Big GMR (the sun finally came out :) ), down to Sierra Madre and over to the SGRT to get back to the park.
