I enjoy riding Painter through Uptown Whittier up to the top of Turnbull Canyon. It all feels very grand tour-esque riding under the tree canopy on Painter and then ascending the hairpin turns in Turnbull. Nothing as big as Santa Monicas or San Gabriels but it's a lot of fun

This is a real short little kicker, ~300 ft @ 14%. I hit it on my occasional long afternoon commute from Red Hill in Irvine to San Clemente. For me it is a frequent Strava Challenge, though you need to be careful since I've had to slow a couple of times at the little dip at the start for dog walkers and skateborders.

True, there are lots of good (but short) climbs in Whittier Hills, Puente Hills, Rowland Heights and Hacienda Heights areas.

The most daunting (to me) is to take the Hacienda Hts. side of Turnbull to Avacado Terrace, right on Oak Canyon, left on Descending. You will be ascending Descending and it will be brutal (and narrow) but you will have tree-canopy effects on both Oak Canyon and Descending.

Oak Canyon gets up to 11% and Descending up to 19%. All kinds of fun (but short, relatively speaking).

After rereading this set of posts I realized I haven't done Double Cannon since the TDPS. Ran it before the rains. Yup, I still feel that Century dragging my legs a little. Made it though. That second hill is a real killer after running the first one wide open.

Just did Oak Glen for the first time last week. I really enjoyed it, but since its a tourist spot its better to go on a weekday. Its an HC if you go through town, and a Cat 2 if you start at the end of the Yucaipa (Bryant). https://www.strava.com/activities/116...nts/2577784001

There's a backside to the climb but it adds about 15 miles to my trip, and I was shot after hitting the summit.

I would totally be down for a Whittier Hills ride, East/West/Colima/Painter/Turnbull are my regular routes. Not that I'm an awesome climber or anything, I just ride them a lot.

I've never done Descending. Is it anything like Ardsheal? Ardsheal is the only climb I've ever DNFed. Makes me angry, and one day Ardsheal will be my b*tch.

just did both of these plus latigo and piuma. corral canyon was unfun until the last two top, flattish miles. really gorgeous up there which made it worth the slog.

las flores i hate with the intensity of 1000 suns about to go supernova. just vicious and cruel like that one girlfriend.

latigo was cool. had descended before but not ascended till now. can see why so many are smitten.

loved, loved piuma. excellent road surface. nice canopy at the bottom. great views for much of the ascent. twisty but not ugly technical. challenging but no obscene ramps.

I like (or used to like) 24th and Euclid to Baldy Village. The climb is pretty good but the descent is better! About an hour of climbing and 12 minutes to descend. At age 69 I am too old for that happy crap.
