Tour de Palm Springs - who's riding it?

There hasn't been much talk about the TdPS. Who's planning to ride it? It's only a little over a week away!

I'll be there with a bunch of friends from Redlands.

There is a 4-page thread on TdPS in Clydes & Athenas.

Perhaps you are referring to the "unlikely cyclist" training thread. Although I did just start another one to see who's going, but that forum and this forum don't have a tremendous amount of overlap.

I'm doing the 100, kids and wife are going 25 this year.

I'll be riding the 100 with my daughter. It's her first century. Really looking forward to it.

100 for me, I am a Clyde and I do not frequent that page much. Still trying to decide if I want to do the half marathon the next day...I did that last year.

Great scenery. Beautiful women. Nice weather, I often go out there and ride just to visit a little bit of summer. Great hills, plenty to explore. 99% nice drivers. Check, I will be there for the ride. Single speed. Beer gardens after. Looks like I'm going it alone this year. Me and 5 bazzlion others...

I'll be doing the half century (my first). Got a hotel room, heading there on Friday afternoon. Any tips/suggestions for a first timer at TdPS?

I can't decide if going with the "leisurely" group will be to slow an don wanna get smoked by going in the competitive group.

Can't wait! Have fun & be safe.

Go at 8... the leisurely crowd for that 55 mi ride are very leisurely indeed.

Where is this "beer garden" anyway? I looked all over last year and had to go create my own beer garden in the room when I was done.

May do the 25 or the 50 with my son - last year was fun, but it is crazy crowded at spots. I think you can get away with bringing nothing but flat repair stuff and sunscreen - the ride is well supported.

The entire downtown and surrounding metropolis is a giant, palms swaying in the wind, beer garden. Several of the small Bistros along Palm Canyon have local craft beers and most have great food. Many after-ride block parties and gatherings. All are interesting and the vibe is energetic. I have reservations at one of those small Bistros, for after the ride..7 to 9:30 pm. Just to be sure. This year a giant Marilyn Monroe will be towering over us during dinner. Hope she is good luck !

OK, thanks... I just wanted to verify that I wasn't missing something crazy awesome. I'm pretty sure I can sniff out beer in bistros.

Tour de PS

Good News. The long term forecast for the 8th in Palm Springs is for mid forties early rising to the low seventies. Wind 5mph from the NW. Exactly why I go out there and ride. And the exquisite gals in expensive wrap. Also note: The Highway Patrol is aware of this event and will have roadblocks up checking for overimbibement on the ways out of town after the race. Stay, Play and be Safe.....

My wife and I are both riding the 100. Since the forecast has such a low wind speed I may fit my deep dish carbon wheels.

If the winds were like the last two years, that would have blown me right off the road!

weather underground has this: Friday night low of 39, so hopefully it will be at least in the 40s by 7, and 5-10 mph winds are tolerable as well. High of 65 Saturday, which is absolutely perfect. Man, it really stinks living in So Cal.

Friday Night

Saturday

I hate to break it to you, but you're checking weather in the wrong place. Last year there was no wind within Palm Springs city limits either.

Look up weather in Desert Hot Springs. I see a 17 mph wind with gusts up to 29 mph.

Hm, that would make sense but the weatherunderground people basically have the same forecast.

Friday Night

OK. I'm looking on weather.gov, it has pretty wild variations of wind speed from spot to spot, and February 9 is at the far edge of their forecast. We'll see.

I work in the Coachella Valley. I wouldn't put too much faith in any long range (anything longer than 1 or 2 days) weather or wind forecast.

There's a large electronic sign just as you're leaving Whitewater and entering North Palm Springs on the I-10. It often has high wind warnings when no wind is present. And it often says nothing when winds are blowing strong enough that the windmills are spinning like crazy.

I haven't worn a long sleeve shirt since last spring

Well, the wind will be what the wind will be... I'm more interested in the temp so I dress appropriately. And of course, I hope the wind is mild, at least after the windmill portion.

if it's going to be even remotely cold that day I'm out. I rather not drive 2 hours to freeze to death, I can do that from my house lol.

Depends on your perspective... if you're really Russian then you should use little air quotes around the word "cold" when southern californians are discussing weather. It's likely to be around 40 at the start though.
