Cyclist hit and killed on Santiago Canyon Road 2/2

I just read on another forum that a young man, 21, was struck and killed about 7 am near the top of dump hill as he rode eastbound. I'm sad for his friends and family. I'm also angry this is happening with such frequency here in OC and So. Cal. in general.

"This morning a friend of mine was hit and killed while riding his Road Bike on Santiago Canyon Rd by a hit and run driver. Joey worked with me at Two Wheels One Planet in Costa Mesa for about a year and was currently working at Jax in Irvine. He was 21. Joey was a really good road cyclist and one of the safest riders I know of. The woman who hit him fled the scene but we were told she was later caught. I don't have a lot of information about it right now but Joey will be missed. Be careful out there!

Was a friend of a friend. Apparently he was pinned to a guardrail and then went through the windshield of a car full of teenagers who later fled the scene and claimed they don't remember anything when the cops caught them. This is unconfirmed conjecture.

drunk driving at 7 am... when the hell are we safe anymore? Yeesh.

That damn road is huge too, tons of room for cyclists and cars alike. What a tragedy.

I rode past there about 10:30 yesterday and didn't sign of any type of accident, I assume southbound is heading from Jamboree to Cooks? that's the way I was headed, strange there wasn't any evidence of an accident. Last year was a bad year cycling fatalities, lets hope this isn't the start of another one. RIP

Drunk driving at 7 AM is bad.

What's worse is the driver was 18 and fled the scene.

Indeed. Probably was a late Saturday night party. Add sleeplessness into the mix. That's not an accident, that's an inevitable.

Terrible that a cyclist was killed while riding in the street. Seems to happen a lot around here in So Cal.

Hmmm. I've been to Jax in Irvine, so I may have met the guy. Very sad. I was also planning to ride SCR next weekend, in that same direction. I'll expect to be seeing the ghost bike.

My thoughts go out to his family, and the community at Jax.

Perhaps you should restrain yourself and limit yourself to polluting your own thread.

This is not the thread for this type of discussion. If you'd like to debate riding on the sidewalk vs riding on the street, feel free to start a thread in Advocacy and Safety.

I wasn't debating anything. I was simply saying it was terrible that a cyclist was killed while riding on the street. Is there something debatable about that statement ?

The streets vs sidewalk debate belongs in A&S, not here.

Please do not post in this thread again.

+1. All I can add is "****** ******* ************** murderer". People like that Sommer ***** (looks like her ****ing parents couldn't even spell) must be tried for 1-st degree murder in circumstances like these. We've got traffic laws that blow my mind - the fine for carpool violation is $371, the fine for texting (which in my book is worse than drunk driving) - $159. They can even fine you for not wearing a seatbelt, but if you kill somebody – meeeh, no biggie… 90 days in jail will fix it.
RIP Joey.

Don't get too upset before the verdict is handed down, Tavareetch. The 90-day claim was made by someone with a reputation for being full of ****** (Someone told me that's the Russian word for truth, can you confirm?)

Is it Russian slang for Meth Head because that is what they found in her car as she was caught. Tough to drive around with your windshield smashed into your face. Joey needed help. What a lowlife piece of excrement. Lets show up at the trial. In well behaved numbers. Show we care. DUI drivers are murderers and ones who run deserve a special circumstances enhancement. Not six months in the local womens' jail.

E-mail me, the "******" means exactly the same in Russian, Chinese, Italian, etc. Whatever she gets, it will be something pathetic, like that ****ing doctor, who got only 5 years for slamming on the brakes in front of two cyclists. The guys survived simply because they were too tough to die.

In Dutch, it rhymes with "sloop".
In English, it rhymes with "zit".
In German, it rhymes with "ice".
In French, it rhymes with "haired".
And in Russian, it rhymes with "Palermo."
