Glenn Ranch Rd, Lake Forest/Portola Ranch
 

Hey... so I'm just starting to ride down in the Lake Forest/Portola Ranch area, and I passed Glenn Ranch Rd today off of Portola. It looked to be a gnarly climb as I rode by. Anyone ride it before? What's it like? I can't find a Strava segment which maps the road itself.

Glenn Ranch is not that bad... I always take it when doing the Canyon (either direction). It's short. The gnarly climb is Saddleback Ranch... geesus goes on forever. but will drop you 3/4 of the way up the climb from Cook's Corner...

A good alternative to the Saddleback climb (but mostly parallel) is to go up Saddleback to the first street on the left (Millwood), turn left and climb that instead of Saddleback. Much more interesting, lots of changes in % and overall more fun. At the summit it drops you back onto the top bit of Saddleback (by the park, pretty much).

So, bottom line, you get to the same place but you have a more entertaining time getting there.

I've ridden by it a couple of times, but never got up the gumption to take on Saddleback Ridge. I'm "gravitationally challenged". The reward for me is that it drops you at the top of Aliso Creek trail for five + miles of signal free cruise. (Just gotta watch for a couple of blind curves, one of which hides a stop sign at a minor street where the motor cross traffic doesn't stop)
