Palm Springs - Medals? We don't need your steeeenking medals!

My wife and I just completed our first century together in Palm Springs. What an accomplishment we have made together! Finished one hour faster than our goal!

As we came across the finish and got our t-shirt, we started looking around for the medals presenter. Only to realize that there was not a single rider that finished wearing a medal. Probably stupid, but it was a big let-down for us both to not get that precious memento of all our hard work!

So the next few days, I went to figuring out how to present my awesome wife (and myself) with a medal. I could have gone to a trophy shop, but their offerings seemed pretty bland.

Then I came up with the idea for these:

Finished them tonight, and get to give the pink one to her when she comes home. Hope she loves it!

Very nice! But FYI, medals are a running race thing… Generally speaking, you don't get a medal at a cycling event.

I understand the feeling! My first century attempt, Tour de Perris 2011, I aborted after about 70 miles. They had been giving out finisher medals which i did not get. In 2012 I rode it again and finished, redemption! imagine my discontent when I went looking for the medals only to find they decided not to give them
This years tour de Palm springs disappointment for me was the lack of a finishing line photo. Last year we finished the century so late that the finish line photographer had already put his gear away. This year we finished about 3hours (elapsed time) faster and still no photo
It must be a running only thing as we got a finisher medal last year for Bike the Coast. Come to think of it we did at least receive a KeyChain at tour de palm springs last year.

I guess everyone's different () but medals mean nothing to me; I'd rather not get them, just more clutter in my life! At Breathless Agony they try to give out something different every year (bottle opener, license plate frame, etc.) so that's interesting at least, but ultimately just a different kind of cluttter.

In the old days (and sometimes still) they would give finishers an embroidered patch (got a whole box of them!) but the only "event thing" that I bother with are the numbers we get to pin on our jerseys. I "clutter" my office wall at work with them. At least they're a kind of background for my commute bike as its parked during the day.

I would totally agree with this. Please don't give me any memento of any sort, in the case of Palm Springs I wish they'd skipped the t-shirts and just put the money towards the charities. I don't need/want any stuff- believe me, my ride was plastered all over Facebook where I got plenty 'o virtual high-fives and that is enough for me. I guess it's another work t-shirt for Mr. H that he can trash with abandon, so that's something.

Yeah, Rick...I have a bunch of patches as well. I was never exactly sure what to do with them, so I just tacked them to the bulletin board.

I've gotten medals. The wife thinks they're cool, so I take them. I prefer showing off my Garmin Track.
As much as you paid for that Beemer [Mercedies, Audi, Escalade], I'm surprised it didn't come equipped with turn signals.

I've already announced to my wife that Coldstone will be our reward after the Tour of Long Beach century! Ice cream is a great motivator!

I kind of agree with you - medals just for participation mean nothing to me too. I usually don't take them, or if I do, I trash them promptly. But I've got a silver and a bronze medals from the Huntsman Games (for placing second in the road race and third in the TT respectively) and these mean something to me and are hanging proudly on the wall at home.
Old people are keen to give good advice because of their inability to give bad example.

At the Camino Real Double Century last Saturday they were giving out free meals at Knollwood's but only if you finished by 9:00PM. That was a great motivator but it was close with an 8:44PM finish for me.
