Probably wasn't a local given the Tx plates. Never had a problem riding down that stretch of PCH with a very wide bike lane.

bikemig 06-02-14 10:53 AM

Nice shot of the texas plates. Hopefully this will lead to an arrest soon.

nesdog 06-02-14 11:36 AM

Wow, I hope this got reported and they pull the DB and his passenger. That is absolutely unforgivable. Would love to hear the follow-up if they get nailed. OP should take this video to every TV station.

Frigging unbelievable!

Sadly, no, it's not unbelievable. It's all too common. With more cyclists wearing go pros, we are just starting to see how common it is.

TrojanHorse 06-02-14 12:56 PM

Too bad there's no image of the actual driver nor passenger.

Okay, but in almost 27 years or so of riding bicycles on roads, I have never had a projectile thrown at me. I have had motorists intimidate me by driving real close a few times, but no projectile ever thrown.

CommuteCommando 06-02-14 03:28 PM

Projectile: it seems mankind has been doing this for a long time. Nowadays its called a missile, or a type of gasoline soaked rag in a bottle. Gatorade is new. Not much to that.

The passenger (who tossed the Gatorade) is seen pretty clearly toward the end of the video - leaning out the window and looking back at the cyclist.

TrojanHorse 06-02-14 04:23 PM

Ah, you're right.

That's a pretty excellent license plate shot too and kudos to the cyclist for not swearing up a storm and sounding like part of the problem. :notamused:

I think it's a Virginia plate and the "TX" is just part of the license. The form of the plate is the same as this image of a Virginia truck license plate:

I have had two cameras. A cheap Vivitar and a Contour. Neither of the were good at getting plates. That was a very lucky shot. The problem is the emphasis on "Action shots" favors high frame rate. A good "security cam" would have a much lower frame rate, slow as a high end DSLR. This will enable still camera-like resolution, which is really what is needed in situations like this.

Good catch.

I've been attacked with `projectiles` and close approach twice on PCH.

In March 2008, in Sunset Beach (now HB), from a Mazda SUV, a rear passenger partially rolled down his window and shot me from behind (maybe 15 ft away) with a paintball CO2-G-U-N. The pain and impact (middle of my back) was huge, but I stayed up. I found out later that they might have been traveling to a PB Tourney at the HB pier.

In August 2010 in HB (PCH and Brookhurst) a Range Rover with 3 college age guys crept into the bike lane and tried to get me at arms length and strike me with a sandel (shoe). I looked back in time to dodge them - as they drove by I could hear the passenger sigh with disapointment that they couldn't catch me sleeping or unaware.

Elvo 06-03-14 12:03 AM

I've had a glass bottle thrown at me on PCH in Huntington beach by a bunch of high schoolers in a truck.

CommuteCommando 06-03-14 07:16 AM

My most frequent run ins seem to be Middle aged women in Beemers, Mercedes, and Rovers in Laguna Niguel. These tend to be more of the "Of course I saw that silly man on the bike I just passed then turned right in front of. Why is a grown man on a bike, and why is he not on the sidewalk riding against traffic?" variety. The Sunset beach variety seems to involve alcohol more often than not. Real scary.

Any updates on the identities of these Ginny goons?

furiousferret 06-03-14 08:50 AM

I have yet to be assaulted on a bike but when I used to run the same BMW used to always throw stuff at me, or try to hit me when I was running on the road. It was rare enough I didn't expect it, but happened about 6 times over a 3 year period.

Jed19 06-03-14 10:33 AM

This story was on the 11 PM Channel 2 News last night. It said the Sheriff/cops are investigating for assault. It is only a matter of time before these two idiots are collared by the law.

Rumpled 06-05-14 11:35 PM

I know the manager of the team the cyclist rides for. (Actually, I think this rider is involved with running the team as well; I've never met him)
Apparently he has found a Facebook pic of the girl in the truck.
Hopefully, some charges come from this.

Bendopolo 06-09-14 10:32 AM

Nothing will happen. I had a Texas RV crash the entire side of my car at Angel Stadium, on camera. Nothing done about it because it was an out of state vehicle. Lets all go to Texas and wage war....

For me it's Armenians in Mercedes. They can't imagine a cylclist won't pull over so they can continue to do 70 mph in a 30 mph zone. Of course none of them have plates on their cars so the gopro is a moot point for me

Yeah, I used to live in the East Valley. It isn't racist to say that. Simply demographics. In S. Orange county they're largely Asian.

Many in BF do not believe this stuff happens because where they ride, it has never happened to them, or worse, they blame the cyclist, because such things have never happened to them.

marquhar 07-08-14 02:57 PM

OC Sheriff is trying to be all things to all people - typical political manuevering.
Cyclist is suspected of using “offensive words in public, likely to provoke a violent reaction.”

Gatorade bottle thrown at cyclist from truck could result in charges - The Orange County Register

When I first heard about this, I thought he used a GoPro. I was surprised to hear that he was riding with the I-phone in his hand and recording. So he is steering with one hand, and still manages to point and shoot.

TrojanHorse 07-08-14 06:36 PM

Whaddaheck?

Charges are also being recommended against the bicyclist, he said, who is suspected of using “offensive words in public, likely to provoke a violent reaction.” Officials suspect the cyclist made “rude, disparaging comments” before the incident was recorded on his cellphone, Hallock said.

So cyclist has a video of the actual assault and they may not press charges but they may vs the cyclists because they're assuming he started it?

Any of you other riders intentionally start altercations with a car that's behind you so that you can get run over?

What's the charge anyway, saying "neener, neener"?
