GMR on July 4, 2014

I think I've read that GMR is closed to cars on July 4th in the past. Is that gonna be true for this year as well?

I've heard that it is closed every year for the fourth.

It most likely be closed Thursday nigh and open Monday morning. Last year that was teh most riders I have ever seen barring an event up there. There was one crash and cell phone service is spotty so be careful.

And bring a printed copy of the notice on the front page of the ANF web site that says it's closed to motor traffic, but open to cyclists. Not everyone (even in the forest service) who patrols the road gets the memo.

The Forest Service site has posted the road closure on their page (10 am July 3 through 10 am July 7) but it doesn't say open to bikes. We called and they explicitly said that it is open to cyclists and that it will be on their outgoing recording.

Just sent a e-mail through the ANF "Contact Me" page thanking them for closing GMR/GRR on the Independence Day weekends and that we cyclists appreciate them closing the road so that we can ride safely.

I'm going to try for the ski lifts this year . . . if I get an early enough start. Gonna be a warm one this year. I have the right gearing this time.
