Laguna Ride

I'll be vacationing in Laguna/Dana Point area in July, are there good road routes in the area or should i consider another location?
Looking to ride 25-40/day...climbs/rollers/flats all good!!
Any suggestions!
Thanks for the help ... enjoy the ride! Doug

This may be a little ways from your area, but two local bike groups have loads of rides in Orange County. You can ride with the groups on Saturdays or Sundays (and other days), or you can just tackle one of their published rides on your own.

Bike Religion used to, and maybe still does, have shop rides that were quite enjoyable.

Unfortunately, the Coast Highway right around Laguna Beach is some of the most bike unfriendly coastline in the state. No shoulder, very heavy traffic and scary numbers of out of towners, and drunks.

If you are comfortable with hills, get out of Laguna inland on Laguna Canyon road. If you want to do a coastal ride, this gets you past the worst part. cc - Laguna Beach, CA

Actually looks of great roads in and around Dana Point that keep you off of PCH... if you go the the bikeirvine.org (BCI website) and check ride bank, look for the Tour de 5 Cities route slip - the ride start on Crown Valley and goes through all of those south OC cities - it's quite beautiful (but hilly). You might also out strava and look for rides with Crown Vally Pwy, Laguna Canyon, Moulton, El Toro, Aliso... as key words. Also, PCH south of Dana Point is actually fine to ride on... just take that down to as far as you want to turn back... there will be beach traffic however and if you make it to San Clemente, you can catch the bike trail along the freeway and continue down to Las Pulgas. From there you can actually enter onto the marine base but bring ID...

and as suggested avoid riding through Laguna as much as possible although north of Laguna is fairly OK (in fact go north to Newport Coast Rd turn right and all sort sof possiblities open up...) ... If I take the Canyon to Laguna, I tend to go inland before PCH and ride through the neighborhoods until I am out of Laguna then I hit PCH...

No kidding on this. There was another fatal car vs. bike hit and run last week. I just did a guided ride and bike rental for some visiting out of towners who were staying in Laguna Beach. I picked them up from the hotel and drove a few miles south to Dana Point so we could start in relative safety.

Even if you take the side streets through Laguna, you still end up on PCH south of Nyes Place (very tough climb BTW) for the trip through South Laguna.

On a more upbeat note, here is a fun San Clemente ride I put together for a few clients.
