They have GOT to do something about this bad habit of running somebody over and then fleeing the scene. That's just awful, never mind the fact that he killed a man through his (assumed) carelessness.

Driver probably stopped to see if his car was damaged so he wouldn't have to tell his parents.

I looked at Google Earth and the distance from Emerald Bay to the school is maybe 1.2 miles.

I grew up in Tustin and PCH was one of my favorite rides...
Red Hill< MacArthur<PCH<Laguna Canyon<Sand Canyon.. thru Irvine Ranch and back...
or the reverse ride.
It just hits home with me.
I now ride with a flashing light on the back all the time.
RIP

Rode that stretch a couple weeks ago. Was riding last night and had originally planned to go down Laguna Canyon, up that same stretch of PCH and then up Newport Coast, but changed our minds at the last minute.

I also ride with a flashing rear light in the hopes of catching the eye of a slightly distracted driver.

RIP.

Bad news like this hits me and my wife hard, and we can only imagine how the family and friends of this man feel.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

I use one as well but think in this situation not sure if it would have helped. Likely a texting use of mobile phone eyes off road situation ... OR he could have seen the cyclist and being inexperienced...steered the car where his eyes went.
