Is it pretty safe to ride down to Seal Beach around this time? Thinking of using trails instead of being out on the street for safety. I have not heard of mugging in SGRT or CCT but would rather ask here for those who possibly commute along these two trails. Is it also quiet as in no joggers or walker on the path at this time? I also do not see much homeless people compared to SART.
Lastly, is the wind pretty brutal going southbound at this time? Thanks in advance.

We ride these routes, at least south of Del Amo, frequently. You'll find a lot of people on SGRT until sunset. Coyote Creek is quieter, but you'll still see plenty of people until sunset.

Just last night we rode from Rynerson Park in Lakewood to the dog park along the southern edge of El Dorado Park and back. The return trip was right at sunset. There were bikers, walkers and runners along the route. The only trouble was that we had to wash the gnats off of our arms and legs when we got home. There are clouds of them at sunset.

Headwind? We rode 18mph southbound and 22mph northbound. Usually the only time there isn't a brisk headwind southbound along these routes is early in the morning or when there is a Santa Ana wind. Tuck in and grind it out!

Thanks for the informative response. Really appreciate all the details. I think this will be my Tuesday ride now. Staying away from roads and not having to worry about getting hit or drivers passing me by within a foot at least once a week.

I ride the SGRT on my after work rides from the trail's end at Seal Beach to El Dorado Park and back. The wind screams at that time of day...it's not uncommon for me to do 25 MPH northbound, and barely 15 MPH southbound, particularly when the trail bends at the power plants so you're riding dead-on into the wind.

From what I recall, people say SGRT and in particular the rio hondo trail are dicey north of downey, so the part you're talking about should be alright.

Are they finished mucking up Coyote creek yet? Seems like it's been closed forever near the 91

As far as concern about predators goes, I think that on any of the trails in Southern CA, early morning is the riskiest, since at these times the paths are occupied only by an occasional commuting cyclist. More cyclists and pedestrians in the afternoon equals greater safety. It seems that most of the reports I have seen on BF of muggings for bikes happened in the early AM.

Same here, seems like a faded memory. I used to get on at Rosecrans Blvd then a nice ride to the beach and maybe a little breakfast and Rivers End restaurant.

Did you mean the I-5? I take it as so.

There is an on-topic thread about this, but to summarize, at least three things need to happen before the CCRT is restored through the Alondra_Blvd/I-5_underpass/SFS_SwapMeet section:

1) Freeway Dr must again connect into Alondra east of the bridge (this is expected in Fall of `14)
2) Alondra Bridge over the I-5 and the CC must reopen (expected at end of August)
3) The assinine pedestrian bridge over CC that is privatized by the Swap Meet must be removed or raised off of the bike path.

We will be lucky to see any 2 of the above 3. Its very amazing how some rich guys from Newport Beach that run the Swap Meet (a cash business that caters to `el mundo tercero`) have excluded a whole class of the public that use a non-motorized thoroughfare. It shows how `plata sucia` can takeover when the State of California does so much eminent domain action.

new bridge at SFS Swap Meet on CC bike path is a private resource that interferes with a public resource (the bike path). Why was the bridge installed so that access is restricted by the Swap Meet? So far, cyclists are banned.

Is Abu Yusuf still the Bike Coordinator? If not, can I have an email for the new one?
