@Rick@OCRR, in regards to the Camino Real Route, I was setting up a training route. Thinking of doing the first part of the route down to Oceanside and then turning around and coming back on the last half of the route from there. Not sure we'll actually go that far, the route is 135 miles.

However, if we do, I have a question about the Pendelton part. Route descriptions says you can go through Camp Pendelton if you want. When I try to route it that way on Ride with GPS (because it looks safer to me than riding on the 5), I can't figure out how to get out of Pendelton and onto the 5. Advice? Either Pendelton yay or nay? And if yay, how to do the routing?

Hi Heathpack, You don't have the situation of "how to get out of Pendelton and onto the 5" since it's one or the other. Coming into Las Pulgas heding South, you turn right to get to the 5, left to go through Pendleton.

On the way back North, on Harbor, you have to get into the left turn lane to get to the Hwy 5 entrance or go straight to go through Pendleton. So there is never an opportunity to get directly from Pendleton to the 5 or vice versa.

Hope that's clear but let me know if you have any questions.

My problem when trying to do the RWGPS route was heading south. When you get to the southernmost tip of Camp Pendelton (or what looks like the southernmost tip to me on a map), I couldn't get the route to get onto the 5 without back tracking. It looks like there's an on-ramp for the 5 right there. Zooming in with satellite view there's maybe a gate there? Maybe that's why I can't get on the 5?

Which is safer? Pendelton?

Pendleton is safer, no doubt. You do have to show your I.D. to the friendly Marine at the gate but after that, simply follow the Bike Route signs when on the base.

From your post above, I gather you are asking in the context of your training ride, not the actual double. Is this correct? If so, and if you intend to go South through Pendleton and then go North on the 5 Freeway (just to get the experience of both perhaps?) then you would simply proceed on Harbor until you reached the 5 Freeway entrance ramp (which would be on your right). No back-tracking required.

Hopefully I understood your question correctly!

Yes, for my training ride. And no, you didn't understand the question, it was about the southbound route through Pendelton. But don't worry about it, I got directions from a friend who is familiar with the route and will be riding Camino Real with us, just not the training route.

Hi Heathpack, Sorry I didn't understand your question! There's no trick to exiting Pendleton on the South side, you just turn right onto Harbor at the traffic signal.

So how was the waffle ride?

I got a great ride in last weekend https://www.strava.com/activities/252375828 but the Sheriff turned us off of closed 39 at the top so we improvised. Sun was a real kicker since I was not planning for it. Should make Palm Springs a little better as it is usually warm.

I'll find out in about 2 months Reg lasted about 5 days before they started to fill the wafer ride (half the length and vert).

I have to switch gears from long MTB weekend rides to long roadie rides. Past couple months I was just doing 1hr rides on the roadie, speed and recovery days at speed. I need to work up to 6-7hr road rides again or the waffle ride will break me. I did get in a 90mile saturday but only 4:40 moving time. Need more saddle time!!

^ Yeah I missed that for some reason I thought I read something on Facebook that it had past already.

Tour de Palm Springs is in the books and now it is time for the first double of the year, Camino Real. I think I am going to start in the 6:15 group (drive in and out on the same day). I saw there is a chance of rain on Sunday but I think we are fine and looking at good weather. Maybe arm warmers and vest only.

One up and one down Camino Real was a great ride but the first 14-15 miles were a little bit of a headache getting out of all the street lights. Weather was perfect! Lone Pine (Southern Inyo) in two weeks and with this fresh snow it WILL be beautiful! Compared to all my other first doubles of the year (Solvang and Joshua Tree) I had a great time. Still had an epic bonk but recovered with a long rest stop and some help and kept motored along.

Getting ready to head up to Solvang for the Planet Ultra double. Should be a fun double and the weather forcast looks good!

My next is Hemet. My wife is riding that one too. After that it will be Devil Mountain . . . a tough event for me last year; hope to be better prepared this year!

Did a recon ride of Mines/Hamilton/Sierra/Calaveras yesterday with friends who are signed up for DMD for the first time. I planned to ride it this year, but with Death Valley not happening, I started late on developing a base. Getting to the bottom of Sierra at around mile 60 was brutal enough -- I don't want to think about getting there with an extra ~80 miles in my legs. On the plus side, riding up the back of Hamilton with fresh legs was really nice.
