    Tour day Palm Springs

Anybody doing it this year? Silly question, I know... 11,000 people do it.

I promised my newly-turned 12 yr old son I'd ride the half century with him this year - anybody else have family ride plans?

If he has a soccer conflict it'll be the century for me.

Every year I consider it, and every year I get back stories from friends about what a pain it is. I've ridden in PS many times myself, summer and winter, so I know what the area is like. Somehow I never get around to signing up for this event.

boring as all get out but an easy century or near metric century for people to ease into at year's beginning.
now if they blocked off hwy 74 to cars to ascend to sugarloaf cafe and back or threw in the ps tram rd climb, then we'd have something. as it is, the prettiest road in the valley imho (1000 palms rd) is a descent but only on the 55 mile (or whatever the half century option is) route. a shame.

I did the 55 mile ride last year with my 12 yr old son. I think we will sign up for the same route again this year.

I enjoy the area and the ride. As long as you get our early and skip the first rest stop it is great. I am trying to convince my buddy to do his first century there with me. My wife and her friends are doing the 25 mile ride.

I skipped it last year to do Solvang. Now that that is off the bucket list, I am considering TdPS. I got involved in running a half marathon this coming Sunday. I was selected to participate in a group of recovering health trauma victims. The sponsor is a local hospital/physical rehab center and I am getting free personal training and membership in a really plush gym, plus other "preems" like shoes and shirts and stuff. I will also be running two other 13.1's as part of the deal. One on April 26 and the other in August. Triple Crown Information for the America's Finest City Half Marathon.

I am going to try and fit two Century rides in between. TdPS seems perfect both from timing of the event, and the fact that there do not appear to be any categorized climbs on the route. This is the farthest I would want to go for a day trip century, 1 1/2 -2 hr drive. I'll decide on going after this Sunday.

In late May/early June is the San Diego Century. A lot of climbing on that one, but I have done all of the hard ones on that route. There is nothing really over 6%, but one of them is pretty long.

Once this Triple Crown thing is off my bucket list, it is back on the bike as my primary workout. I will continue to run, but it will be one or two 5k's per year to save my feet.
As much as you paid for that Beemer [Mercedies, Audi, Escalade], I'm surprised it didn't come equipped with turn signals.

I'll be riding it with my wife again this year. True, there's good and bad with this event but overall the good wins over the bad.

For the last two years we've had very strong side winds starting out , then it turns into a miserable headwind . . . and finally, about 15 mi. out, we turn right and enjoy and wonderful tail-wind descent .

Other than that, excellent organization, live music at the rest-stops, plenty of food and drink, bike service (if needed) by KHS mechanics, easy to follow routes and a fun vendor area with some great deals. Plus . . . a good tune-up for my legs before the Camino Real double.

I have considered it but haven't actually done it. Hopefully this year!

Last year I was involved in a nasty pace-line crash during the TDPS but this year my plan is to do the Tram Way on Sunday morning, before heading home.

Sounds like a plan, let's ride the Tramway! Sure, it's a steep and long climb but how bad could it be?

Rick, were you in the paceline crash I almost got sucked into? It was fairly near the beginning after leaving town when the strong side winds were blowing. A van passed a big line of us, suddenly blocking the wind. A guy swerved towards the van and touched it with his hand and went down. Suddenly every one right in front of me and around me was going down. It was the two-wheel equivalent of "the big one at the Daytona 500 or the Talladega 500. My first century...I was riding my hybrid and still getting used to riding clipless. I'm still not sure how I didn't go down, too. Beginner's luck, I guess.

Why, not bad at all! I can't believe I've ridden a hill in So Cal that you haven't ridden. I say "ridden" but I paced myself up the hill with a lady walking on the sidewalk. The first part is probably about 10% but it looks flat as a pancake because there's no reference close by to see what's going on.

The trip down (after the curves near the top) is straight as an arrow on nice pavement. I think I hit 45 sitting up on the way down. Definitely fun. And February / March is definitely the right time of year to do it.

I haven't ridden DC in 4 years when I did the MC and it kicked my butt then. I feel a need for redemption.

^ps tram road used to be a little more fearsome because of sketchy, uneven pavement. now, with new pavement and the dip near the midway point levelled out somewhat,
it's slightly (like 1-2%) easier than it was. last time i rode it in december, the guard in the rock shack just before the parking lots (and where the road really ramps
up for a grand finale) turned me around. no bikes past that point apparently. that was on a weekend during "season" but dunno if there's someone stationed there
early in the morning on weekdays. if the guard is there full-time now, the climb is truncated with the hardest part lopped off.

Yeah that is true, that guard will not let bicyclists ride the last 3/4" mile, the hardest part. Not sure why they did that, that means the tour (that was supper brutal but fun to watch) will not be using it again most likely.

The tramway is a private road. That's why they can tell you to turn around. I went like 7 AM and not too many visitors so it was ok. Going down, too many cars going up and got windy near the bottom, got pushed around and kind of dangerous with too many cars going up. Tram hours I think begin at 8 AM.

Going down the ride is breath taking because of the view of the entire coachella valley. Palm Springs is like a speck compared to it all.
