crossing the border

Has anyone tried to cross the border into Mexico on a bike? Or would it be "asking" for another incident like the guy at the airport?

Back in the day, the bike club would cross every weekend. No big deal! No one paid any attention at all!

On the way back north, try to take cuts in the car line. It'll probably work well, you'll just get quizzed and waved through. "Are you a citizen OK get moving"

If there's any hassle, walk the bike through the pedestrian line. Again, zero hassle. I guess you could be asked "what's in the tool kit" to which you answer "tools" and get waved through. It's not like you're packing bottle rockets, or bottles of tequila, right?!

A generic answer: a guy I know was nervous, wondering what are they going to do? Don't worry, we told him, they're going to ask "what did you buy in mexico" and he had bought a bottle of tequila and a dress. We pulled up. "how you doing?" "bottle of tequila and a dress" "pull over, to that secondary lane"

OFF TOPIC:

On a recent camping trip to SoCal my friends and I visited Mexico for a day. One of my friends, who could easily pass for Mexican, had bought a poncho and a huge sombrero with 'Mexico' stitched into the front. Ironically, the border guys let him through without a thought, but if he didn't have that stuff he might have been suspect.

guzzle the tequila, you'll fit right in with the other silly touristas.

You'd just as well act like a bike snob, nobody wants to talk to them they're so stuck up, ya know?

Thanks, lizard, but I don't drink...
glad I discovered the member-blocking feature.
Geesh, anyone w/ an actual sense of humor who doesn't take things literally got something constructive to add?

BTW Thanks, cal_gundert05, that's a great story

Have not crossed into Mexico since before the Homeland Security folk tried to secure the border.
But did cross a half dozen times before (by tandem bike) and it was never an issue. Actually I am Euro-born with a slight accent and no one ever questioned me or asked for proof.
Have crossed into/out of Canada since Homeland Sercurity took over things, and really, it was astonishing!
The Canadians asked quite a few question heading into Canada but asked for no proof. The Americans just asked us 'where ya going?' then waved us through.
Just do it . . .
