    Las Vegas... bike friendly?

I'm relocating to Las Vegas, this summer. I've done some google street-viewing around the area I'll be working (UNLV), and noticed that there aren't any bike lanes. Is LV a bike friendly city, or am I on my own, here?

I moved here in 2000 and decided that riding a bike in Vegas was the worst bet around. BUT, things have improved substantially since then. The UNLV area is a more difficult area. There aren't many bike lanes in that part of Vegas. The Metro buses all have nice bike racks.

The city is committed to improving the bike lanes and has made significant improvement in the outlying areas. I live in Henderson, Green Valley and appreciate being able to tool around my end of town for everything that I want to do.

These are a couple of connections through the Metro Bus system to let you know some of what is available. I see more and more bikes all over the valley. Don't despair, where there is a will, you will find your way. I personally like the Henderson area for biking and lots of other things. Check out the valley and OH yeah

This is one of the better roadie hook ups in the valley. Talk to them. If you like MTBing, send me a PM, that's my hot button.

I've been a Sin City resident since 1985 when the town had about 385,000 residents. While some of the roads I used to ride in the late 80s are now only for the suicidal, there have been a lot of alternate routes added. I could ride over 50 miles from my front door without ever using any of the busy main streets. Secondary roads are wide compared to many places so you can figure a way around with a little effort.

There is one big impediment right around the UNLV campus that restricts travelling south from campus. It is McCarran Airport just south of Tropicana Avenue. I live a couple miles directly south of the UNLV campus and have only biked to campus once in the last 10 years (Sunday morning) because the streets surrounding the airport are so busy and choked with tourists and commuters. More to the point is how you will handle the heat. Midday summer temperatures can exceed 110 degrees and often don't go below 100 even in the evenings.

    Great advice! Thanks a lot!

Some of the grad students in my department want to get a place in Henderson... Is Tropicana/Rebel *that* bad? Since the places they're looking at are about 8 miles to campus, I would love to be able to ride, daily.

Places to the east of campus would be better neighborhoods, easier access. I have lived in Henderson for 10 years (Stephanie and Horizon Ridge area) and love it. Great community, MILES of riding, you wouldn't be disappointed. But UNLV is a bit of a hike from there.

I have just started riding recently, am in the Tropicana/Eastern area and find Harmon a good ride, except 4ish when the commute hour puts the cell phone drivers on the pavement. There are few in control of their autos, that can drive and talk on their Cell phone at the same time. Afternoon commute unfortunately put a great number of these drivers on the roadways...

I live in the South Side of Las Vegas and have been cycling here for 10 years. For me it seems Green Valley, parts of Henderson, Southern Highlands, some parts of Summerlin, and Aiiante are not too bad. North Las Vegas generally stinks and there are alot of bad crime areas there too especially anything next to or east of Las Vegas Blvd.
Forget Downtown and the main part of the strip, again lots of undesirables, taxis, and tourists that are poor drivers. The majority of taxi cab drivers are the worst of any of the people behind the wheel out here, they are downright dangerous. I have lived in LA and NY and never seen cabbies that are this poor of drivers.

Stick to the more outlying areas and the nicer neighborhoods and you should be good.

Hey Chainring, do you ever ride Horizon Ridge between Green Valley Ranch (Target Parking Lot) and Sloan Canyon the east end of Horizon Ridge?

Yes Daspydr, I do ride that section of Horizon Ridge. I live in Southern Highlands so a good Saturday ride for me is: up Southern Highlands Parkway to St Rose, down St Rose to Spencer, up Spencer to Horizon Ridge, Then take Horizon ridge all the way up and return. Of course there's always the extended rest stop at JT's bike shop at the top of the long hill on Horizon Ridge. Which usually makes my wallet a little lighter for the return trip....lol.

All great advice, guys! I analyzed some of the LVPD's crime statistics, and it jived 100% with what you're telling me.

A couple more grad students and I are coming town a few days before August 1st to sign a lease, somewhere. We're going to focus our search east of campus. Hopefully, between riding daily again, and my Wii fit plus (lol), I should be back down to fighting weight before Christmas!

I may have seen you sometime. I'm the mid 50s guy on a MTB with an orange and gray camelback. I like to tool around Sloan for a couple hours. Say hi sometime and I'll buy coffee at the brewplace in with JTs.

What kind/color of MTB are you usually riding? I am a late 40's guy either on a Red/White Trek hardtail, or Matte Blue Access XCL Hardtail, or sometimes a dark grey Marin Portofino roadbike. I am usually over closer to the St. Rose hospital area of Horizon Ridge but will keep a lookout for you when I am over further towards JT's .

I have a purple Norco Nitro and a black Team Deore XT. Have you ever tried the Single Track south of Anthem East Park at the south end of Eastern Ave?

I have heard there was a single track up there somewhere but I did not know how to get to it. I will have to checK it out. Is there a specific street it starts from, or just nearby that park?

This should take you to the maps and trails page. You want the Mormon Tea loop system. The Bur Sage Loop has a couple of "Rider Made" trails. The city map needs to be updated. Mormon Tea says it is only .72 and that is probably correct. At the top of Mormon Tea is Beaver Tail. Follow Beaver Tail (double track power line road) to Bur Sage. It is some fun single track. Once you start looking around you will find about 15 miles of trails and double track. If you get really aggressive you can take a road east over the East side mountains down and find your way back to JT's. I'll show you sometime if you have about 4 hours.

Thanks so much Daspyder. I will try those trails in the next few days when I get the chance.

If you ride the Bur Sage loop, you will find a spur at the very south end of the loop. It takes you back to a double track power line road. If you turn left there are tons of little roads to explore. The main road will also take you East over the "PASS." Its a genuine butt kicker to get up there, but the downhill is a blast. It gets you back to JTs.

There is a "Totem Pole" on the spur with a Sharpie for leaving messages. I have also seen big horn sheep up there.

Since a handful of you are already posting in this thread... What's your favorite bike shop in LV, and why? I'm going to need a tuneup and spoke adjustment when I get to town, and I'd like to avoid the bad shops, if I could.
