Tell me about Summerlin Ne

I recently retired and the wife and I are considering relocating to Summerlin. As far as I can tell it's within riding distance to the Red Rock area where there seems to be access to some good road biking. My wife has a friend in Henderson and one in Vegas but neither are cyclists so I'd like to get the perspective of someone who rides in the area.
We're from Brooklyn, NY and sick of the winter and urban congestion. My main concern is dealing with the heat in the summer and my wife is concerned with a looming water shortage in the area. Anyone live in that neck of the woods and ride with any clubs in the area? Any info appreciated, thanks.

Summerlin is a great area for riding. I've lived in Vegas for the last 12 years, all of them in the southwest part of town. There are plenty of low-traffic streets / side roads to get out to Red Rock canyon and beyond. You will probably feel the heat over the summer, but you learn to live with it and ride early in the day before it heats up too much. I don't mind the heat too much, and even enjoy the occasional afternoon ride in the 100+ temps. My friends think I'm a little off for that... they may be right. Just make sure you bring plenty of water.

You will love the Vegas Valley for riding. I live in the Henderson area and we have a thriving cycling community. On Facebook look for Green Valley Cyclists. There is a website called meetup.com. Several local cycling groups post rides there. I ride with the Hendersonrides group. There are several GREAT bike shops in the Summerlin area. They will hook you up with local groups in your riding level.

Red Rocks is just one of the local epic rides. Mt Charleston, River MT Loop, Spring MT, Blue Diamond, Wetlands-ride now, summer is coming.

And if you like to MT Bike, this is heaven. And the dirt is a tad cooler in the summer.

You will adapt to the heat in time. There is no humidity and you will love that. The water conservation efforts are important and for the most part the community does a great job. Las Vegas Cyclery has a great bike wash that recycles all the water used.

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon has good summer riding areas that are up in the woods and not too far away. Since you are retiring, I think you will enjoy some of the overnight jaunts you can take to avoid the heat in summer.

OH Yeah, if you are here by April-

Classic ride, meet tons of people and see the area. Maybe we can have coffee.

Thanks for the info and overview. Sounds like my kind of place. I'd rather deal with a hot summer than a brutal winter. These old bones are ready for some dry heat
I haven't been out that way since I ran the Vegas Half Marathon fourteen years ago. After which we got married. Maybe we'll cross paths when we get out there.

BTW I tried to reply to Vegas Triker but I don't have enough posts to send a PM yet.

I hear you on those winters. I spent more than a decade in Kansas and Colorado. I keep a snow shovel in the garage as a reminder. You can escape the heat, for the most part. But cold just stinks, icy roads are no friend of mine.

Be well.
