Child stoker kit - rigged for independent pedaling

A lot of the e-bike crowd are building custom cranksets that spin freely when the motor is engaged.

Is there a way to put a child stoker kit on the tandem and incorporate a freewheel or independent pedaling system into it? I'm going to move from the 175mm to 200mm cranks on the tandem, and I'm afraid I'll wrench my little guys knees. My wife complains about that. I don't effectively communicate stopping and starting to pedal I just do.

Thoughts?

?? You're not proposing to put a 200mm crank on the child stoker kit are you? Going to a longer crank arm for yourself should result in a natural reduction of your preferred cadence and would therefore reduce any stress your pedaling might create for the child stoker (presuming his/her crank length is picked to be appropriate for their leg length). No technical reason why you couldn't have independent coasting, but I'm not sure it would be a good idea. I'd be concerned that a non-pedaling child could start to nod off and possibly fall as a result.
