Oh, how things have progressed!
Attended the inaugural 1976 MTR in Kokomo, IN and probably about 5 more in various places in the Midwest. It grew from about 30 teams in '76 to about 600 at times!
Had some great fun, including riding the velodromes in Kenosha and Indianapolis and a couple post-rally tours too.
In 1976 at the Kokomo MTR is where the Tandem Club of America was originally formed
and we signed up . . . and are still members today.
Grand Rapids should be a fun place this weekend!!!

Being ex-Michiganders we are sorry to say that we will not be attending MTR.
Just got back from a 3 month sojourn in northern Utah and now getting caught up with stuff back in Tucson .
Caadman: are the Oakland Riders, Slow Spokes of Macomb, the Wolverines and the Dearborn Cycling Saddlemen still active out your way?

While at MTR, checkout the vendor area and see a friend of ours, Bob Davis, who will be displaying some ariZona c/f tandems.
Have fun in Grand Rapids!

Unfortunately -- or perhaps with fuel supplies here in the Southeast being so iffy -- fortunately, MTR was beyond our grasp this year. However, we will have many friends in attendance, to include a contingent who belong to the Double Forte List (Forum For Off-Road Tandem Enthusiasts, get it.. F.F.O.R.T.E.) who will be bringing along their off-road two-fers for what they are calling "Muddy MTR" rides on Friday and Monday at Fort Custer and Yankee Springs. Also keep an eye out for Dennis Bushnell, his wife Jenny who will most likely be in the company brother Andy Bushnell and his wife. My guess is, Dennis will be on a light blue Bushnell, assuming he hasn't gone and built himself another newer personal tandem.

Wow Rudy and Kay, I didn't know that you were former michiganders, small world eh??...Yeah I ran into Bob Davis at the rally and he said that you weren't able to make it..But yeah the oakland riders is the only group that you listed there that isn't active now. I'm actually a member of the wolveriens, and this coming sunday we'll be doing "a peach of a ride" and that's put on by the slow spokes, and the cycling saddleman in dearborn are still active also, I don't ride with them or do much with them, but do know one or two people who ride with the wolveriens who are members of that club also...So yep they are still active..

The rally was just TREMENDOUS!!, perfect weather, sunny and highs near 80 every day, at 9am each morning when we started out it was around 60 but warmed up quickly with the sun, couldn't ask for better cycling weather!!..

I hear yah tandemgeek, I think you're down in atlanta right?? and somebody told me that gas there is over 5 bucks a gallon, THAT'S CRAZY!!, up here it's just over 3, I still hope it goes down soon!!.....I don't know the Bushnell's, so I didn't see them, but Mel and Barb from tandems east were there and had their bushnell, it's always good to see and talk with them!..

Take care, and maybe we'll see you at a rally next year. I'm not going to be able to make STR this year, but am looking at GTR next may..

Peach of A Ride . . . in the Romeo area, right? Rode that several times. Last time we did it was the 20th anniversary event, I believe in 1992; happened to be in the Thumb area, and of course just happened to have our trusty tandem along!
So what did you think of Bob Davis' ariZona tandems? Get to test ride one?
Good to hear that Mel and Barb K where there; have ridden with them in Tucson.
Sounds like MTR had ideal weather! How big was the turnout?

Yep it was in the Romeo area untill this year, for some reason they moved it to a town called Memphis Mi. it's closer to richmond michigan. So that'll be new for us this year, but probably still just as good and similar routes I would think also, we'll see..

Yeah Mel and Barb really get around the country and world, their trip to new zealand coming up this december/janurary is all filled up already, so it dosen't surprize me that they've ridden with ya out in arizona..

No we didn't get to test Bob's tandem, but it sure looks nice, he had a blue one there this time and rode it each day and when it was at the vendor area it was on a digital scale showing it's weight!! man amazing!!...My sister was talking to him about making a triple, but that's about all we got in with him and the tandem.

Oh yeah the weather was PERFECT!! sunny all 4 day's and lows at 60 when we started each day at 9am, highs near 80 each day, couldn't ask for better cycling weather!!......The booklet that we got said they had 450 teams, but there certianly were more, because of the last minute sign-on's they had, so it wasen't as big as dayton 2003, but still pretty good..
