Bike Friday Traveler
 

Anyone have one of these? How well do they handle, and how rigid is the frame. I am not looking for a high performance tandem but one that I can use with my family. My wife is short but would like to be able to captain the tandem with my daughter occaisonly and the Bike Friday Traveler looks to be able to fullfil that role.
Note: I am in Australia and there are not many tandems available here.

Mate, there's nothing available here. I had to import everything but the rim tape on our tandem. And that cost me $8 bucks a wheel here.

We have a Bike Friday Tandem Traveler XL, as well as a Burley Duet. The Bike Friday is really a good bike. The handling is a little quicker because of the smaller wheels. It takes a ride or two to get used to it, but after that it isn't an issue. It accelerates quicker because of the smaller wheels.
It is not as stiff as the Burley, but, its stiff enough. We bought the Bike Friday so my then 7 year old daughter and I could ride it together. It works very well for that purpose, and we've done MS150 rides with it.
My wife and I have also used it to travel with. With 2 adults, the flex is more noticeable, but not to the point that it's unacceptable. (our team wieght is 350 lbs) Now that my daughter is big enough to fit on the Burley, we're going to get rid of the Bike Friday because we prefer to ride the Burley, mostly because it is stiffer.
If you want a bike, that is almost infinitey adjustable for different sized riders, and will pack in 2 small cases to travel, the Bike Friday is a reasonable choice. However in my opinion, its overall performance is a little below a good regular tandem.
Bike Friday also makes a model now that converts from a tandem to a single bike. I wish that would have been available when we bought ours, so that I had a single bike to travel with as well as the tandem.

That is how we woould use the tandem. Currently we have an old peugeot ladyback tandem. Works ok with my daughter on the back but is a bit flexible with my wife on the back. Also the stoker compartment is very short.
The ability to have different size captains is the main criteria, the packing ability is a bonus. That way it would fit in our caravan. The caravan is a Jayco Eagle campertrailer. There is not much room when it is folded up for travelling. I can put bikes on the car roof but inside the caraven is better.
