Pedals for children

I ride with a 4 year old stoker. She loves riding and is really good at pedaling and doing her fair share of work. I currently use regular toe clip and strap pedals. They work well except that her feet slip out every once in a while. This usually causes her to get hit in the back of the leg on the pedal's next rotation, and it means that we have to stop (sometimes in the middle of a hill), to get the foot back on. I have considered clipless pedals but don't fancy the idea of buying a new pair of cycling shoes (even they're even made this small) every 6-12 months.

Does anybody have some ideas either about some kind of clip or modification that might work? or about cheap clipless shoes made for children?

Thanks a lot

you could try to really tighten the straps in your clipless pedals, if that doesn't work you should try to look for smaller pedals for her.

Have you tried Powergrips? A strap that runs diagonally accross the pedal.

I have not tried these on her, my wife uses them, but I don't think they will hold her little feet in place much better. I have fixed my problem however. I cut and sewed some old straps onto the current straps, about an inch above the pedal. This strap goes around the heel and keeps the foot in place. After trying it out last night, I don't think there is any way she will slip out.

I will keep my eyes out for little shoes in season close-out sales.
