Hi there everybody, I just wanted to post this and see if I get any responses to it..I know a guy on the racing forum who posts when he is going to be at certian places across the USA and will be riding his bike, in case anybody wants to join him or give him ideas on routes to ride, so I decided to do the same here since my mom and I will be bring our tandem down to the Ft. Meyers Fla, area this upcoming March...
So I hope there are people on this tandem forum who live in the ft. meyers area...We'll be down there the week of march 22nd thru the 29th..I'm flying into tampa on the 21st and then we'll be in ft. meyers area on the 22nd thru the 29th...This is the begining of the outdoor riding season for us, since we live up here in Michigan, and my mom and I start riding on the indoor trainer starting in february, so we'll hopefully have some form, but we're not looking for super long distances or fast paces..We'll probably keep the mileage each day to under 60 miles, and we like riding normally between 16 and 22 or so depending on conditions of course.
If any of you would like to join us, or if you have info that you could give regarding routes to ride and stuff to see, that would be great and appreciated.....I'll leave my e-mail address here at work, if you would rather communicate that way..
Three of us Southeast Fl coast forumers rode through the Fort Myers area on a Fl tour back in June.I was not impressed with riding in the city itself however we came up the beach route from Bonita Springs to Ft Myers Bch and that was a decent ride but nothing spectacular scenery wise. There were two bridges on this route if you like those and the one over to Ft Myers proper was fairly steep as I remember.I suppose the ride to Sanibel would be nice but I have never been there. The section in that area I did like was 31 from No. Ft Myers to Arcadia going through remote timberlands and then orange groves. We got to it by taking Pine Island Rd. east to it termination at 31.
Thanks RWTD for the information, I've been to sanibel and it's pretty nice to me, but I've never ridden to it or on it, so your info will help....I'm wondering though if that beach route into Ft. Meyers is the road called Estero blvd..I've stayed in a hotel on the road and I think that's what you're talking about, but could you confirm that?? Thanks,
Yes that is the road I'm talking about. In the area right across the bridge from Ft Myers which I think is Ft Myers Bch there seemed to be a lot of seedy types hanging out but further down the area seemed nice enough and as you get to the second bridge heading south towards Bonita Bch there was a state park with lots of mangroves .
Thanks for the confirmatin RWTD, yeah I think I remember what you're talking about, so we'll see where we end up riding, but we may ride that road.....Oh I also wanted to ask you if you've gone/ridden further south in naples, did that tour that you were on go thru there??....If you don't mind also, can I ask where you're based out of/where you live??
I seem to post here in the morning and you seem to be on in the evening, so have a good evening, and thanks for talking here.
Yes we rode through Naples on 41 until the cutoff to Bonita Bch where we took the Bch route .It was nice but there was a fair amount of traffic on 41 in Naples however there was either a shoulder or wide outside lane I can't remember which I think the latter though(there was a bikelane/shoulder on the beach route /Estero Blvd though) .There was a neat little park on the beach in Bonita we stopped at and Dave(Dwagenheim)took some pictures there(he called it Naples in his journal) that are included in his journal of our trip(Check in the touring section of bikeforums under Dwagenheims journal at the top and scroll back to the early June time frame for the details and pictures of our trip I believe it was titled Fl. tour or something similar) .I am located in Northwest Broward Co. not far from the Palm Bch Co. line and about 15 miles from Ft. Lauderdale.I have been recovering from my recent No. Fl. tour recently and so sleeping in some which explains my lack of early posts recently. If I was looking in the Ft. Myers area I would also look into the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel and the Pine Island area for potentially nice riding areas though I have no first hand information on bikeriding in either area they are suppose to be scenic.
Hey there RWTD, I went over to the touring section that you mentioned, and man that guy sounds like a pretty interesting person, seem's to have ridden all over the place (usa) that's pretty cool...He has a TON of postings and that helped a lot, thanks for suggesting that...I just looked in my atlas and found that route 41 that you're talking about, it runs all the way from Naples to north of Ft. Meyers!!, that's really cool, we'll probably try that, and maybe ride south from Ft. Meyers or else we'll drive down to Naples and ride north, but the places you suggest here, seem like great places to check out, I'm sure we will...
So you're over in the Ft. Lauderdale area, my brother used to live over there before he moved up to northern florida........No problem on not posting in the morning, I look forward each day to seeing what's on this forum when I check it out in the morning, so that's fine when you post like you do....So you just got done with a north florida tour eh?, if you don't mind me asking, were did that take you to, I used to live in Tallahassee, did you make it there??..
The only problem with 41 through Naples and on up the westcoast is heavy traffic as its basically the main drag for the region. That is why we detoured off to the beach route at the first available spot and then took 31 to Arcadia instead of 17 further up 41.41 in the Naples area was best coming into the city from the east from the Everglades/Marco Island side as there were definately large ,new bikelanes on that section but once 41 turned north in the downtown/oldtown Naples area it seemed to get more congested with more interaction with traffic as I recall. I went as far north as Gainesville as I just had 10 days total check out the details under Gainesville Tour in the main touring section it is still on the first page down below the journals with the other posts.
