Parts for an old Suzie Front Hub.
I bought the Tandem that I asked about the other night.
It's in great shape, weights a ton, but I'm looking forward to my first ride with my 5 year old tonight.
I spent the evening and late into the night last night doing a little cleaning and getting a good look at what I have to work with. Looks like new cables all round and perhaps a replacement of the rear der.
One of the front hub cones is shot. Bearings are copper color, probably from overheating. The other side is perfect with good looking bearings.
Can I find new cones? It's a quick release hub, but probably 1990 or perhaps 89.
I spun up the back wheel and it too feels like it needs some work.
Recommendations on replacement parts for a bike this old.
Most of the cranks and ders are Suntour - Sugino...
Thoughts?

You should be able to pop out the cups and replace them with bearing cartridges. The usual cartridge size for hubs is #6001, 12x28x8 (I usually order them from Bikes Etc. in Oregon). You also need the axle complete with bearing sleeves, spacers, and locknuts, but check to see if you can just get sleeves to fit the existing axle. There are basically two axle threads, Japanese and Campagnolo. I've replaced many Campag cup-and-cone (thrust)bearings with sealed cartridges just because I run them thru the winter. But I'd have to say that as long as you keep them overhauled, the old thrust bearings work much better (smoother, more reliable) than the newer cartridge bearings.

I'm pulling the rear hub this weekend and believe I've got a place locally that will carry replacements.
I'm riding it in to work tomorrow - my idea of "Car Pooling".
Man the thing is a tank - we have a scale at work and I can't wait to see how much it weighs.

I would guess that a shop with a lot of old small parts would have some cones that fit ok. My '94 Cannondale hybrid came with Suzue hubs that were pretty generic.

I rode it to work this morning and put it on our scale. It barely fit on an angle.
It weighed in at 59 lbs. That included a full water bottle, a rack, two paniers and a par of shoes.
So if you were to strip that down, I'd say somewhere in the 56 range.
But I've been riding my Specialized Roubaix Comp - All carbon with Ksyrium SL wheels - I'm riding that tomorrow to see where it weighs in at, but as I recall it is about 15.
So when I say a Ton - it's all relative.
