Tire and Cassette Questions

One of the suggestions the previous owner made when I picked the new tandem up was to replace the front tire. I'm inclined to agree seeing as it nearly fell apart trying to take it off the rim. I'm thinking I'll replace them both - the Conti Touring tires I had laying around only have a max psi of 85 and one seems to be cracked. Any suggestions on tires for the beast?

Second questions is about the rear cassette. I have a brand new set of 105 STI shifters for a 9 speed bike. I'd love to replace the bar end shifters and old brake levers with the 105s. I have a newer 105 long cage der, now all I need to find is a way to replace the 6 speed to a 9. Is this even possible on an older Burley Duet? (At least that's what I think it is)

The rim is fairly new (40 hole) and hub as someone corrected me earlier is a Suzue with drum brake.

Thoughts on all of this.

First, relative to the fount of knowledge offered by TandemGeek and Zonatandem, I might as well shut up. But, with that aside let me make three comments.

First, re tires. I suggest you take some time and use the search function within the Tandem forum and see the tombs that have been written already. I am a Jr. newbie and quickly learned many topics have already been covered. My $.02, read the tire reviews and don't skimp on tires when a tandem is riding on them.

Second, re swaping things around. Advice I was given by the guru's. Make it roadsafe and RIDE IT! Learn, read, watch but RIDE it. The longer you can wait the better your upgrade decision will be.

Third, I have a Burley Duet with racing bars front and back. Late model type with two piece rear stays vs. the single piece "bend around a tree" type Burley stay. I have attempted to eMail and call Burley with SN to get date of MFG or model year but no go. When did get someone on the phone the guess was huge and they said they had no record. (hard to believe) Mine has Sansin 48 spoke hubs. I would assume 40 spoke hubs were later than my bike. Perhaps the guru's can speak to the validity of my assumption that as years have passed tandem have moved from 48 spokes to hardly any in paired spoke wheels. Mine run so very smooth! I plan to leave them be.

Burley's serial numbers don't mean anything. When talking to them ,the componet mix will give you a hint at the year model. They dated mine as a '97.

Have been riding the Gatorskins for a while now on my single bikes -
Knock on wood, since spring of 2003 I have not had a flat... so I'm going to stay with the tried and true.
Gator 700-28.

I rode the Daddy Bus, as it's being called to work today and can not get used to the bar end shifters. I'm used to really accelerating out of traffic lights with my hands on the hoods and just can't get over the reach down to the bar and shift thing - so, although I'm torn with the idea of going away from the current "complete original equipment" I've really got to replace the rear wheel and add the parts I already own to get this to the STI equipment. I'll keep all the older bits to put back on later.
Have my eye on a rear wheel on the bay, but would love to do the work on the bike this weekend - so I may go to the LBS and see what they have.

Thanks for all the tips so far. I'm looking forward to this new adventure I've taken on.

To go to 9 speed will require a cassette type rear hub wheras an older 6 speed was probably a freewheel hub. New hub required but it is probably cheaper to go to a wheel builder and get a new wheel. Then a couple of points- the width of the rear axle- measure and make certain you get the right size. Strength of the rear hub- make certain it is strong enough and if you want to retain the hub brake- that it can be fotted to the hub. Finally strength of the rim. You cannot get away with a lightweight solo rim- go for strength on both the hub and rim.

What brakes are you using. STi levers don't pull enough cable to operate some brakes, although you can get amplifiers that will help.

They are the cantilever type - I had not considered that - thanks for the insight. I'll be sure to test that first before I got to the work of the rest of the conversion.

If they are cantilever and not v-brakes, sti shifters will work fine. I did it using sora brifters.

Well, upgrading becomes co$tly and can be problematic.
Rear end of Burley would have to be spread to accept 9 cogs instead of 6 . . . local frame builder or very good LBS could do that for you.
Rear hub would have to be upgraded to take a cassette instead of freewheel . . . then buy cassette and matching new chain too. Shim 105 should work but may have to fiddle a bit to dial things in. And if you do that, new cables would be another idea.
On our present tandem we got rid of Dura Ace STI (after 3,000 miles of usage). . . and replaced them with (gasp!) 9 speed barcons.
Had trouble trimming front der. with the STI and no such problems with barcons. Lo-tech, less problematic for us.
Suggest you ride what you have on tandem first before going through upgrades/expense.
As for tires, any brand of good tire will work, including 85 lbs Contis. Currently we use Maxxis tires, 700x25mm; Detonnator model on the front and Re-Fuse model on the rear. Have used most major brands: Contis, Specilaized, Hutchinson, Michelins, IRC, Performance . . . all with varying degrees of satisfaction. Lotsa choices out there!

travel agents for avid single digits will work with the sti

tires
search but I like the tandem IRC for the price point. (almost better than the new gator skins I got new on the cannondale) don't tell any one I said this. ( like the extra rubber the IRC offered on the longer rides)

dont run damaged or old tires .. I plan on chaning mine once a year (reusing them on the touring bike)
