Bluetooth Intercom

I am looking for low cost rider to rider option that would allow me to put the transceiver in my seat bag/jersey and have a single earpiece. I have used 2 way radios before, but the handset extension is wired and bulky.

We've been using the Cardo BK-1 all season. We love it! My wife calls out "car coming" and I call out bumps ect that she should prepare for all in a fairly low conversational voice volume. Once it's installed, it's very easy to use. To turn each unit on, hold the on button down, it beeps and the blue LEDs flash. Push the on button again and a different low pitched beep is sounded and a LEDs flash red. The only thing that takes a short time to get used to is that if you are not talking, after a few minutes, the unit makes a fairly loud beep and goes in standby mode.To reactivate, you just talk and your back in business. Once your used to it's idiosyncrasies you completely forget about it and it's use becomes intuitive!
As we're riding, my wife and I usually keep up a casual conversation!
PS: I picked up ours on Ebay, brand new,for about 50% less than list price.

So we do a lot of group rides, and we often pull a significant portion of the time. We are used to calling out "car up", "car back", "gravel", etc., loud enough to be heard several bikes fore or aft. Do these become ear splitting for the tandem partner? It would be an unfortunate tradeoff if we gained conversation, but at the expense of safety.

Took the Cardo Q1 out for a ride Sunday and still have some ajusting to do. The gain on the mic was set too low to activate the intercom via voice without scaring people halfway up the trail, so I have adjusted that and we'll see how it goes. One disappointment was as expected, it cuts the music completely out when the intercom is active rather than just lowering the volume. What I didn't expect was that after the intercom call ends the music comes back automatically for me but not for my stoker, I have to reach up to my helmet and restart the music streaming to the other connected set.
I was hoping that this would do what we were after but I don't think bluetooth is the way to go for us yet. I might pick up another cheap wired system like we had before. But we'll try it a couple more times to make sure now that i've ajusted the mics a bit.

I'm new to the world of tandems (and really enjoying it so far) and I've been looking into the various options for tandem communications. I tried out a cheapo wired motorcycle system from eBay (~$15) just to see if it would add to the experience and it really did.
The Cardo BK-1 seems to be coming out on top and I have really gotten some good information from reviews here. The idea of using it on half rides to have a connection for music and incoming calls is a real plus. But, retail is still a bit pricey for me and I haven't had any luck catching on on eBay.
In my research I also found the Interphone F5xt Sport. It seems to be what a lot of people are looking for - mono, intercom and bluetooth device connection. But it doesn't seem to be available in the US. I saw someone mentioned a connection with Interphone, you might be able to check on US availability.
My question is - Has anyone here tried using one of the Smart phone intercom apps? My wife/stoker has an Android phone and I just inherited one from my daughter (since I bought her a new one), we already have bluetooth earpieces, so I thought I'd give that a try.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

No connection to seller other than the purchase I made. Item was fully functional, packed in original box and shipped quickly.
Cheers

Thanks Ian
I bought a BK-1 Duo from this seller on a well-known triathlon forum. He has another for sale at a good price. https://forum.slowtwitch.com/cgi-bin/...i?post=4774765.

Try the SPH10 or the Expand a little bit cheaper
Look for it on Amazon or Revzilla.com its always about 10-15% cheaper there. I use these on trail rides with 4 buddies or solo riding so i get music and phone calls.
You can Connect 2 hands free device and 1 A2DP device works great, you just have to put your bike helmet first then the headset.

We used the Sena sph10 the last half of last season, did well for us. It is a bit heavy on a bike helmet and frankly, took some rigging to make it all work, especially the speakers. It works well with bluetooth phone connection, never use it for music, just to hear each other better.
