disc rotors

Anybody using Hayes V9 (9inch rotors) with the Avid BB7 calipers? Is there a reason they should not be used together?

I've been using a Formula 220 in front and recently picked up a custom-cut Hope 220 for the rear (Speedhub), which I haven't used yet. They both mount up fine with my Avid BB7s.

Speedhub, have you tightened things up and taken it for a spin yet? If so how does it work? What brand and model of adaptor are you using? I sent an email to Hayes inquiring about the set up and they were not particularly helpful, said you should only be pairing calipers and discs of the same brand, which frankly strikes me as a bunch of BS. There may be issues such as how brake shoes line up to be considered etc. but if we all took the attitude of using things strictly as the manufacturer had marketed it the Wright brothers never would have attached an engine to a bunch of bicycle parts.

Speedhub, It gets more interesting. Just got an email from Hayes they no longer make the 9" rotor. Any idea if your supplier has more available?

The 2-piece red rotor in my previous post is a Formula, which I purchased from UniversalCycles.com. I purchased front and rear kits, which came with their respective adapters. However, last I checked, the 220mm rear adapters were no longer listed. Universal is usually good about listing out-of-stock inventory with an "expected by" date, leading me to wonder if the rear adapter has been discontinued. Perhaps an email to Formula USA would be in order.

Alex at MTBTandems reported receiving some Hayes 224mm rotors shortly after they began shipping. Drop him a line to check his stock.

The rear Formula rotor in the photo I never used, though I have a matching one up front. At the rear, I just completed a Speedhub conversion on this bike, and ordered a Hope custom 220mm with a Rohloff 4-bolt mounting pattern, though conventional 6-bolts are an option. Visit HopeTech.com and drop them an email for ordering information.

We had our inagural ride on it last night, and the Hope performed well. Hope only has the capability to cut 1.8mm rotors, something they blindsided me with after I received my rotor, so it remains to be seen whether this option will stand up to tandem abuse.

It's natural a manufacturer would stipulate you only use their rotors with their calipers, if not for liability, then for sales. However, I've never had a problem mixing and matching other makers' rotors with Avid BB7s, which are single-sided actuated and therefore "push" the rotor into the opposite-side fixed pad. If it's not a problem with these brakes, I can't imagine it being an issue with 2-piston calipers. My list of other-brand rotors includes stout 165mm x 2.0mm Magura units sold by Rohloff, and the Avid calipers have no problem flexing them sideways.

Good luck with your search!

Chichi:

Chainreaction Cycles has both the Hayes 9" and Formula 220mm in stock for IS mounts (as this is written)

And lots of 220mm Hope rotors so you can do a fine job of colour coordination (versus any colour you want so long as it is red for Formula.).

Chichi, I just double checked Universal's site, and I see the Formulas + rear adapters are back on their list, as are the Hayes V9s + adapters. I see them at Speedgoat, as well. So there ought to be some inventory out there to pick up, even if Hayes really discontinued them.

Prairie Boy, I can't find pictures of these Hope 220s on the web. Have you seen one? I'm curious if the aluminum carrier is larger, extending out closer to the brake track?

My presumption is the heat dissipating properties would be improved, compared to Formula's relatively long stainless steel "fingers."

Too bad for me, I don't see any way to make a floating rotor with a fat aluminum carrier work with a Speedhub, due to tight clearances. I'd love it, if I could.

Speedub:

I can only find photographic evidence for a 210mm:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...New-Rotors.jpg

Smaller one is 210mm. Other one is a custom 231mm. Hope will make a custom rotor for a very reasonable fee (was $65 ea earlier in '08).

Not sure if they will make a custom carrier for Rohloff...but it wouldn't hurt to ask...they might even make it in lime green for you...

Wow, those are blingtastic. Looks like a common aluminum carrier, though. Probably not cost effective to make 'em different sizes for different rotor diameters.

I wouldn't discount it out of hand...my 140mm rotors have a different carrier than my 160s, than my 203mm. Don't have 185mms... (203, 210 & 231 all use same carrier...but that is cost effective; only changing one part not 2)

The custom rotors are being cut by a CNC machine of some description.

If the carriers are being cut by the same method; then making a custom carrier for Rohloff with a larger size to match larger rotor is certainly within reason. (might as well adjust the carrier size if you are adjusting the mount...)

More customization; more $$$ But it wouldn't hurt to ask....

That should have your wheels spinning (or braking actually. )

Don

Apologies Chichi for Speedub and my hijacking your thread.

Here's the reason the two-piece rotor w/ aluminum carrier probably wouldn't easily work with a Speedhub: check out the clearance between the rotor bolts and the black piece to the left called the external shifter (descending from the axle to the bottom of the photo).

For reference, the rotor in the photo is 1.8mm width. There's very little clearance. In fact, I've tried to shim a rotor out, away from the hub, and the rotor bolts contacted the external shifter. By countersinking the mounting holes (they're standard chainring bolts), there may be a way to make it work.

I haven't measured the Formula aluminum carrier, but in photos of the Hopes, it appears the carrier is the width of the rotor plus the bolts, and that definitely wouldn't fit this setup.

In any case, I'm not going to fuss with it.

BTW, the rotors are cut with lasers. I presume the aluminum carriers are forged, as this results in a much stronger structure than machining.

Ok, this is more a test on my ability to upload a file than really adding any useful information.

Attached is a picture of my FSA RD-460s with Hope 140mm rotors. As you will note, the carrier is the same 2.0mm as the rotor. The rivets are 3.75mm thick.

Hope's fancy vented rotors have both the carrier (which they call a spider) and the rotors laser'd out. With a little fine machining thrown in. So I am thinking they use the same process for the regular floating rotors.

So if anyone gets the urge to put a 220mm (or 230mm) disk on their Rohloff, I think it would be possible.

"Apologies Chichi for Speedub and my hijacking your thread"

Keep it coming, kind of an intro to disc brakes, thanks.
