A Dozen Used Tandems 4 Sale . . .

For you folks looking for used tandem, check out the spring '08 issue of Recumbent & Tandem Rider Magazine (rtrmag.com).
The classified section lists at least a dozen used 2-seaters (and one Triplet) for sale!
Varying in price from a collectible/rideable/restored Saxon @ $450 (or best offer) to several Treks, Co-Motions, a Bilenky Viewpoint (hard to come by used), Meridian, Vision and Bike E (recumbents), 'tana and C'dale with prices from $700 to $7500. Who says there are no used tandems on the market?!
Also good tandem article on a prototype daVinci Grand Junction.

I just googled the following:

Craigslist "tandem bicycle"

(with the quotes)

....and got like 4,000 hits. The first ten were all tandems for sale in one place or another. Two of those turned out to be expired with the actual ad removed. The rest seemed still active. Narrow it down to those in your area, or those you wouldn't mind paying shipping on, and start calling!

So maybe this is a stupid question, but why combine recumbants with tandems in a single publication? I suppose that both are considered fringe cycling markets, but i still don't understand the connection.

Might there also be a publication for fixe/mixte?

Cheers!

Brewer45:
Tandem magazines have come and gone in the past couple decades, including Tandem and Family Cycling and Double. It's too much of niche market and these publishers insisted on 'doing it full bore' with glossy paper and loads of color photos (pricey). Subscription prices barely pay mailing costs and tight adveritsing budgets limit advertising $$ available.
R&TR fits 2 niches: tandems and 'bents and even 'bent tandems (a niche within a niche). They have fairly well stuck with newsprint and only lately have upgraded the paper stock and added more color. Being a quarterly rather than a monthly, also helps. It is definitely not a 'get-rich-quick' business!
The only tandem mag that has survived 30+ years is DoubleTalk, the bi-monthly publication for the Tandem Club of America (TCA) members. They accept advertising but there's no fancy color photos.
As a matter of fact, digging through our pile of tandem related publications, came accross issue #2 of TCA's sorta mimeographed few pages that came out whenever there was enough money/news/articles to mail it out. We were among the first 35 members to join TCA back in Kokomo, IN (First Midwest Tandem rally) in 1977.
Do have to fess up to a connection with R&TR as we do some freelance writing and have had articles published in various publications in the past 33 years, including R&TR.
Bicycling is still a minority sport and tandems are perhaps a 3 to 5% part of that market.
Bike Forums and T@H make it easier to get tandem info/stories out . . . and much cheaper!

I think there's something about tandem and recumbent riders having some similar likings for bikes that are outside the norm. At my house, we have a Burley Rumba tandem, a Vision R40 recumbent and a RANS Rocket recumbent.

I know four other couples in my area that also have both kinds of bikes. In two cases, they have a RANS Screamer recumbent tandems as well as singles.

What I hear you saying is that all of us +2 riders deserve our own publication!

Cheers!

A quick check of the BikeForums home page and the numbers of Threads / Postings for each sub-forum will provide you with some level of insight into the popularity of the various types of cycling and interests that cyclists have.

I JUST bought a tandem off CraigsList this weekend. Took some searching to find something that'd fit my not-too-large body. A VERY easy way to mass-search craigs list is to use http://www.crazedlist.org... Just don't search for TOO big of an area or you'll end up getting blocked.
