New to Tandems
I have owned a Vintage Santana for about 3 hours. I don't think the Campy SR hubs are original but the rear seems to be 48 spoke and they are true so I'm happy. Otherwise it seems pretty stock. My objective is to ride with my Grandchildren and occasionally my wife.
The kids are young so the kidback, Tag A Long, and trailer will work for them, but I am all ears if anyone has suggestions. The 175 cranks are too long for my Wife, and the bike may be too tall so I may have to get creative. Suggestions would be appreciated there too. No, she wasn't there to try it which may have been a mistake, but if I hadn't bought it what would I do with the kids?
I am thinking that I would like to swap the dropped handle Bars for flats, and the bar ends for index shifters. Either thumb or the ones that rotate. It's a 12 speed (normal width I think). I have several mountain, and multi speed 24" bikes that I can cannibalize. The brakes could also stand replacing. They are centerpull cantilever but seem past their prime. The side pull cantilever (Shimano XT for example) seem like the hot ticket but I am a road biker so, again, I am all ears if someone has a better idea.
That's most of the concerns. Maintenance, minor rust, some adjustments and your advice and I should be ready to go. Oh Yeah... a much longer seat post!
