I'm going to look at a GT Tandem that is a couple of years old this weekend. The owner can't really tell me much about it except that it is a hybrid. Any ideas on what I should expect to find? How much should I pay? I know this is vague but, any help would be appreciated.
If the wheels are the 700D size you could have a problem. I don't think anyone has this GT exclusive size since GT shut down. You might be able to rebuild the things with 650B rims and tires and get the brakes to line up. I don't think 26" wheels will work but I am not completly sure-take a 26" front wheel along to see.
GT made some nice tandems but that stupid wheel size is a problem....
I'll second MB1's comments regarding the tire size. If this is a GT Quatrafoil (sp) cross tandem with 700D sized rims & tires you'll be hard pressed to find tires for it. Last one I remember seeing up for sale was in '99 and the owner was asking $750 OBO. Frankly, I think that was high then. Given the cost to convert to 26", if they'd take a couple hundred bucks for it and your intended use is "banging around" and "fun rides" then you might do OK. However, I think you could do better. Ok, I checked it out and it is in pretty good shape. It's been sitting for a while and I think I'd put about $100 into it for brake pads (hard and glazed), Cables & Housings, and tires. On top of that I'd spend about 4-5 hours massaging it back into shape. It does have the 700d tires. What's the major problem there? I would like to convert it into a primarily mountain bike tandem. What does that process look like with regard to parts, $, and time? I've always thought about getting a tandem and this just kind of fell in my lap. What is a fair price for this thing? I checked the aforementioned link and I'm just not in a financial position to put out a lot of change. Thanks for all your help!
The 700D tire size was a GT exclusive that they didn't use for very long in the late 80's and early 90's. I've no idea where to get any of these tires and if you found them they would be 10 years old.
That means that you are going to have to change the wheels (you could save the hubs) to either 650B (a fairly rare size in the US) or 26" if the brakes have enough adjustment for the change.
The rear brake should be a U-Brake without much range of adjustment.
This sounds like a good bike for a tinkerer who has a lot of parts laying around. As nice as the bikes were new it is probably not worth more than $200-300 now due to the wheel problems.
OTOH I am a tinkerer and wouldn't mind playing with it but my wife would kill me if another bike showed up.

He had NOS 700Ds a couple years back and may still have some around. If he doesn't he'll know the other potential sources for the GT Gila Monsters in 700x2.0D size (which I believe are the only ones made).
As for conversions, easiest and cheapest way would be to go to 26" wheels by fitting another fork off a 26" bike to it and having a frame shop weld some new brake bosses lower on the frame.

700D tire sizes. There were 3 tires made for 700D. A road tire about 1.3 wide, a hybrid tire about the same size and the off road 2.0 tire. The road and dirt tires were pretty nice.
The saga continues...There are a few connections for tires but, the long time solution seems to be to convert to 26" Mountain Bike wheels. I'm ok with that. I found a reputable frame builder that can move the brake bosses for about $100. He says he prefers to do it with the specific wheel and brake so it can be perfect. Three questions: 1) What type of wheels should I go with for some faily serious mountain biking and occassional road rides, brakes? I'm guessing a v-brake for this application? Which one? and 3) which fork should I go with? I'm hoping to keep this entire project under $600 so a suspension fork is out of the question. Is this 1 1/8"? You guys have been very helpful.
