Tandem rides in the Bay Area

Here's a few tandem rides on Grizzly Peak Cyclists ride schedule for May.
Come on out and join us!

Sun May 10 2/TM/55 Tandem Ride in the East Bay
Meet at Lafayette BART (NW corner at intersection of Deer Hill Rd and Happy Valley Rd) whenever you want, but be ready to roll at 10:00 a.m. Ride will go south to Danville, out Camino Tassajara with a loop on Highland and Collier. No steep climbs, a very "tandem friendly" route, and only one very short stretch of bike path! Bring lunch or money to buy. Faster riders OK, but you're on your own. "1/2 bikes" welcomed, or at least tolerated! Helmets required. Rain cancels. Wyatt Wood, wyattw at jps dot net.

Sun May 24 3/T_TM/35-55 Marin Tandem Rally
Calling all tandems.....meet at the Marinwood Community Center on Miller Creek Rd at 9:40 a.m. for a prompt 10:00 a.m. departure. Join us as we ride through the scenic back roads of Novato and past Stafford Lake to the Cheese Factory. From there it's on to Pt Reyes Station to the Bovine Bakery. Return via Bear Valley, Olema Hill and onto the bike path through Samuel P Taylor Park. Continue on Sir Francis Drake to Nicasio Valley and Lucas Valley Rd. The optional 35 mile route will return to Miller Creek after the Cheese Factory stop via Nicasio Valley and Lucas Valley Rd. Everyone is welcome to join us, single bikes and faster riders alike. We will ride at a social T-pace for the first 11 miles out to Novato Blvd. Come prepared to enjoy the scenery, be happy and have fun! Bring H20, snacks and lunch or $ to buy. Rain cancels. Nancy Yu, nancyyu7 at hotmail dot com or (510) 697-7736, Mark Abrahams, (510) 524-1294. Directions: Take 101 N, exit Lucas Valley Rd, go 1 mi W on Lucas Valley and make a R on Miller Creek Rd. Do you ever hold these tandem rides on Saturdays? Sunday mornings are a bit tough for us.

Our first club tandem rally back in Aug '08 had 19 tandems in attendance.
It's pretty awesome to see so many tandems out together.

Sundays work best for my captain & I right now. We both do Double Centuries, which usually fall on a Saturday.

There is very tandem friendly ride on Saturday, June 13th.
Here's the club listing:

Sat Jun 13 2/TM/100 Wine Country Century Redux
Sold out and rained out? Did you miss doing last month's WCC? Well, let's do it together! We will follow the exact same route. Meet at 7:40 a.m. for a prompt 8:00 a.m. departure on Pacific Heights Dr in Santa Rosa. Here's SRCC ride description: 100 miles-3300 feet of climbing. Heads west across the valley floor before climbing into the wooded hills around Graton and Occidental. After descending to the Russian River at Monte Rio, the route meanders through rolling terrain along the sides of the river valley. There are several climbs...some long but gradual, some short but steep. At about mile 44, the forested hills give way to the vineyards of the Russian River, Dry Creek, and Alexander Valleys. Aside from the fairly substantial climb on Chalk Hill near the end, the remainder of the route is flat or rolling, and beautiful! Tandem friendly route. Faster riders welcome. Please be self sufficient. Come prepared to have fun and enjoy the scenery! Rain cancels. Bring H2O, snacks and lunch. Optional post ride meal at Big Boys Buns & Burgers. Nancy Yu at nancyyu7 at hotmail dot com, (510) 697-7736 Directions: Take 101 N, Exit River Rd/Guerneville. Right turn onto Mark West Spring Rd, Left on Old Redwood Hwy, Right on Pacific Heights Dr. Ample parking on Pacific Heights Dr after Katie Lee Way. Allow yourself one hour drive time from Berkeley.

Turns out that Sundays are not out of the question so we'll keep a lookout for future rides as the 24th won't work for us. We've only been riding since last August after a 20 year layoff so 100 mi (the WCCR) might be a bit much, but up to 100K would work. I think T or TM would work, but we'll have to get this hill thing figured out: got lot's of gears but we're older with somewhat different abilities. Having lots and lots of fun.

Slightly OT but keep an eye out Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend for a bunch of tandems traveling down Foothill Blvd in Palo Alto/Cupertino, etc. We'll be ferrying blind/disabled vets from the VA Hospital for about a 20 mile ride, maybe more. Be sure to give us all a salute should you pass us by. The event starts at 10am.

andydreisch-
OT or not what an outstanding, giving thing to do. Once I have more tandem experience I'd be more than willing to support as well.

Hi rdtompki, thanks for the kind words. 4 other tandem captains and I participated, along with my wife who rode her "half-bike" as sweeper for the tandem train.

We had a great ride to Rancho San Antonio where we met with other vets bused down from the hospital for a lunch in the sun. We probably got 15 miles in today, total, for the event.

I'm honored to play a small part for these wonderful people. Many are from WW II and Korea. It's quite fulfilling.

Andy
