Used tandems in Chicago area
Is there a particularly good place to look for used tandems in the Chicago area? Do any of the bike dealers handle used 2fers?

is the best site I've seen tho it's all over geographically.
I do know of a guy near Champaign who had a Sun Retro Cruiser tandem (w/ gears) for sale, if you are interested I can send you more info and you can see if it is still for sale. Good Luck!

About 1/4 of the way down the list you'll find links to three Northern Illinios bike shops that handle tandems as a primary line of business.
Tullio's Big Dog Cyclery, (Todd Kuzma) LaSalle, IL *
The Bike Rack (Hal Honeyman), St. Charles, IL
Village Cycle Sport Elk Grove Village, IL
They may have used tandems on consignment or perhaps listed on a local classified ads page.
Another option is to contact the Chicago Area Tandem Society, aka CATS. While they don't have a classifieds ad listing on their site, you might consider sending an Email to their Webmaster Sam Waterstreet (tandems@prodigy.net) to see what he might suggest.

Check with Mission Bay Multisport out on W. Randolph Street. The guy has some good stuff, and I can't remember if he had tandems, but if he doesn't, he'll know a local bike shop that does.
TandemGeek, unfortunately, none of those shops are in the Chicago area!

Nothing good comes from waking the dead (threads like this one from July '04)...
True Koffee... but neither is MrEWorm who hailed (and perhaps still hails) from Aurora, IL. Not trying to be a smartaleck..
Having lived near Chicago back in the 70's I prefaced my response with "Northern Illinois" for that very reason. I thought it better to suggest shops that billed themselves as tandem dealers where the odds of connecting with a tandem buyer -- even if it was in the burbs, boonies, or super-boonies -- might be better than the average LBS that wants nothing to do with a tandem.

I know you're not being all uppity or nothin'. TandemGeek need love too...
But he would maybe have a fighting chance going to Elk Grove... the other two are just so far. If it were me, the other two wouldn't even be considerations. Elk Grove, without a car, may be equally inaccessible.
The shop I mentioned in Chicago (which is totally accessible from Aurora) may have what he needs or can at least direct him to someone that's conveniently located. Mission Bay may not be a tandem only store, but if they have it, you'll be satisfied with the service and professionism of the store.
