Clermont would be more or less the center of the state. Unfortunately,, we probably can't make it in September.

Travel is out for us this year but if you're in Northwest Florida (Pensacola/Milton) we'd welcome a ride with another tandem. The local club is sponsoring a century to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters in October. Look at their website West Florida Wheelmen for the details. The first 7 miles is on Blackwater Heritage Trail and then the ride meanders through the rolling hills of the Blackwater Forest. Its an incredibly safe ride with most of the day offering the ability to ride "2-up". Typically 300 riders participate and last year we were 1 of 3 tandems on the ride. Due to the rollers we stay out of half-bikes pacelines.

Oh yeah, our typical Saturday 40-50 mile ride uses the same roads and departs from Truly Spokin (Milton) at 7:30. We're the only tandem but 30 - 50 riders are status quo. If you'd like a map with mileage of the area send me PM.

Do not forget the southern tandem rally is in early October in the Villages around the 10th of the month for 3 days...

I do not think that would preclude a Florida fun ride in September...

My wife and I will be touring the Pacific Coast on the tandem the whole month of Sept -- returning just in time for the Southern Tandem Rally

Here is the website for our tour...

You might want to tie it to one of the event rides that will be going on in upcoming months & hook up with other teams in attendance.

Tour of Sebring is Labor Day Weekend, September 5-7.

This is open to all cyclists, but usually gets a pretty good group of tandems. We’ve had a great time at this event in the past, but we'll be at the Midwest Tandem Rally this Labor Day weekend.

I received an e-mail today about this bike fest and related group ride Sept. 12-13 & forwarded a copy to you;

We might make a hotel reservation and try to make the “Endless Summer Watermelon Ride” there, just in case we are fully unpacked and reassembled, but I probably couldn’t commit until later in the week.

There are two more great events in October, both just happen to be on the same weekend we’ll be doing the LIVESTRONG ride near Austin, Tx;
Gainesville Cycling Festival, October 24, 25;

21st Annual Intracoastal Waterway Century, October 25;

The St Augustine Cycling festival should be good. It's a new course for the Watermelon ride. And our clubs races will also be that weekend. The St John's County authorities were really supportive of the whole festival. When the club test rode the Century course they had a Police escort provided. It's nice when the locals actually want you to come to their town.

I'm open to whatever.

While we don't mind riding along the ocean and other local areas, guess we need another short event / day ride.

Our plans having us riding the STR and intercoastal event 11/25 with Leukemia's Team In Training.

Another local couple that recently bought a KHS tandem is headed to Sebring. St Augustine sounds good too.

I was thinking along the lines of just a group ride without the whole event thing, but these can work also.

Thanks Reg and Bikeguy, both of you have fun on your adventures and be careful. We're planning to see all of you at the Villages.

Word.

Our Orlando club, Florida Freewheelers found the same when they reached out to Clermont & Lake County communities & law enforcement last year. It had been a successful ride for the club for many years, but only a PITA for the community until open lines of communication were set up.

Another good example is the Flagler Scenic Highway/ Rotary Club ride in the spring. Get the community involved, give them an idea of how many hotel rooms and restaurant tables will be filled and they'll be all over it.

Thanks merlinextraligh, with your input of the community behind this, we'll try to make an extra effort to get the bike reassembled ASAP after MTR and try to be there.

I'll run it by the boss about St Augustine and see if we can hit that event.

PK, hold that thought, and while you're at STR talk to Bob Thompson, (this year's organizer). I believe he'll tell you that as soon as he gets clear of the STR work load, he's going to be spearheading an effort to get a Florida tandem club going.

I know that there are three Florida clubs listed on virtually every tandem site you go to, but as I've told the site owners repeatedly, they are non-existant. I've verified the defunct status of two thru their primary, (Stratton Smith), and the third one is a dead link with no one in the area knowing of such a club, so ......

The Thompsons are interested in getting one going, and part of the point is regular, mid-state tandem rides that a bunch of us could make every month or so.

Naturally, we'll be putting up a website and notifying everyone when it's a reality.
