Pretty cool. Are track tandems fixies? I got to ride on the velodrome at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs at the end of Ride The Rockies in 1999 (on a single fixie). It was pretty grueling even doing just a few laps. However, I had already ridden 70 miles or so that day. They made the offer to all of the RTR participants and I think I was the only one to take them up on it. I seem to recall that the Olympic velodrome was quite a bit smaller than the one in the video. I assumed they were all the same size. True?

Read the Wikipedia article to get a better idea, there's lots of variability in length, banking, and surfaces of velodromes. I rode on the velodrome at the UCI world headquarters in Switzerland last month for a couple hours one evening - we just organized a trip with a bunch of friends, many local bike shops do the same thing during the winter. If there is a velodrome near you, then give them a call and see whether it is possible there, too. They had old track bikes for us to borrow, and we did spot a track tandem hiding in one corner. My wife and I were tempted to ask to try the tandem, but it is scary enough riding the track on a single bike - the banking is 46 degrees (200m-long indoor track)! It's scary to start with, but you quickly get used to it, and we had a blast!

I used to ride the Encino Velodrome back in the late 70's ... an outdoor, concrete track. Always had a blast! The experience of dropping down the wall to accelerate from nothing to 30mph is exhilarating!
If you ever get the chance to ride one, don't pass it up! It does help if you have some fixed gear experience first, (which I was lucky enough to have had years of at the time), but it's not mandatory. The average cyclist will adjust to the lack of a freewheel well enough in a few minutes to ride in that controlled environment.
Most tracks have a "newbie" session once a week during season. Inquire at a velodrome in YOUR neighborhood!
