Burley Samba on CL

Howdy Folks,
Last time I was here I was bragging on the great deal I got on this bike on craigslist. $275 with inoperable shifters. Well I fixed the bike, we rode it a few times and now it's back on craigslist.

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/bik/1663599426.html

We enjoyed the learning process and had a some good rides. It was fun to go soooo fast. My wife had never been at that speed on a bike before. But in the end she didn't like the view and we decided to go back to our half bikes(road and mountain for me, cruiser for her). Now she'd like to try mountain biking with me. I'm hoping to use the profit from the tandem to help pay for a mountain bike for her. I guess after all my rambling, I'm trying to ask if my $925 is a fair price. The bike is super solid and like new. Any input(or interest in purchase is appreciated. Thanks for all the previous help!

So, let me see if I got this straight ..... in your original posts, you told us you paid $250 for the bike, got the shifters working by squirting them with some carb cleaner, (a trick you said you learned on here for free), and now a year later you want to know if almost 4 times what you paid for it is a "fair price"? Ain't capitalism grand??!!

In the end, a bike is only worth whatever someone is willing to pay. The soft-ride beam bikes certainly have their disciples, but as to its actual "value", you haven't given us much to go on.

For instance, what year is it? What's the drive train/brifters? Obviously, the bike has had some changes made since I believe it was originally a flat bar bike with thumb shifters. Burley did make some Samba Softride Roads, but this isn't one of them as they were spec'd with 700c wheels.

Which is another problem. You have a bike with drop bars, (which mountain bike aficionados won't be too interested in), and with mountain bike wheels and tires, (which roadies won't be too interested in).

So again, it's worth whatever the market will bear. But if it were me, I'd put some serious specs in my ad, and if I wanted to start at $925, I'd definitely put an "OBO" after it.

Thanks for your response Onegun. After 60 views and no replies I had gotten pretty discouraged. The bike is equipped with Shimano RSX brifters, Shimano STX Rc rear derailleur and 105 front derailleur. It seemed odd to me that the bike had drop bars and 26 inch wheels but did not factor that in to my asking price. Maybe I should have. I believe the bike may be somewhere around a 1999. My only clue to this is a response I received from my first post. This rider said he loved his 1999 Samba which was purple that year(same color as mine) and he paid $2000 for his. This is what I based my $925 price on. Not the $250 I bought it for. This bike has hardly been used and is in like new condition.
As far as "it's worth whatever the market will bear", yes, I understand that concept. What I was looking for was some insight as to the worth of these bikes in general coming from experienced tandem aficionados such as yourself. I realize now I didn't give you enough info. Lastly, I never use OBO in my CL adds. I assume if an item is used and the price isn't stated as "firm", everything is negotiable. Again, thanks for taking the time to respond. This is a great bike and I want someone to enjoy it.

If you email or call Burley with the serial number they should be able to tell you what year it is. Then, BikePedia can usually tell you what the original equipment and cost was so you can compare.

With RSX brifters it's either a seven or eight speed cassette which puts it somewhere in the 90's, but the difference between those two is enormous. Which is it?

It' got a seven speed cassette and three chainrings. I'll be getting the serial number to Burley next. Thanks for the Bikepedia tip. That sounds like a good resource.
Enjoy that sweet Clearwater weather this spring. My sibling and I grew up in Lutz, going to Clearwater Beach every chance we got!

Unfortunately, that's another negative in the pricing considerations. The 7 speed hub can only be a 7 speed, whereas an 8 speed hub will accept an 8, 9 or 10 speed cassette. So in order to upgrade the bike, you have to buy a whole new "tandem-rated" wheel set, (read: twice as expensive as a normal wheel set), in addition to the brifters and cassette.

Yeah, it's spring break here now and although our 15 year old daughter loves it, there will be NO crossing Gulf-To-Bay Blvd at the end of our street for the next 2 weeks. You just have to be BORN on the other side!

I took her and her friends to the beach the other day, and the stop-and-go traffic started 6 miles from the beach!

Yeah I remember that stuff. I guess it wasn't a big deal for me. In the back seat with my old man driving!

Thanks for the extra info on the cassette situation. That's an eye opener.
