First tandem ride with son#2 coming up!

Second born son (21 minutes later than his brother) is flying to Boston tomorrow to get his master's degree and probably won't be back for 12+ months. I'm going to install the longer stoker seat post on the tandem and we'll take our first tandem ride. I think I'll let him do must of the work The daVinci makes things a bit easier for a newbie stoker and we'll avoid the roads that have absolutely no shoulder. The daVinci will get a bit of a workout as we're both about 200 lbs, but I'm sure our trust 40h spokes are up to the task.

He's been living at home for a bit while he finished up school and really has his stuff together. My wife and I just hope he comes back from Boston, but the job market being what it his you go where you can find employment.

    Ride recap to follow.

Well, the ride was uneventful - we didn't fall over. At one point at a stoplight my son turned his head and shoulders to look behind for traffic - that almost had us on the ground. Definitely faster than with my SO on board. Cruised through town, had a sandwich at Nob Hill and returned home. We didn't want to do much more than 15 miles so no real hills, but I can't imagine the rate at which the two of us would pick up speed downhill. We could easily go 22 or so and I don't think he was working very much The difference in speed wasn't all that noticeable, but acclerating from a stop it felt like I had a supercharger - lots of low end grunt.

I don't think he'd want to make a living on the back of the tandem, but he enjoyed being able to look around. Now he's in Boston with school starting in 3 weeks, job starting shortly: 1 year of school and a 6 month internship, then, hopefully, employment. The important thing is that he's found something he really wants to do which is an important step toward a happy, productive life.

RD glad the ride went well. Since I've gotten the tandem last year I've had several stokers. My wife is the most consistant, a good steady rider with adequate power. My grandson is the lightest, but since he feet don't reach he doesn't contribute. None the less at only 43 pounds he's not much of a load.

I've had several other stokers out for little rides. The most powerful of all was my 12 y/o niece. She was a real powerhouse! A real masher, so while great on acceleration not too smooth like my wife. And since she didn't have the stamina, she kinda ran out of gas after about 5 mi.

I would like to get my 30 y/o son out as stoker but at 6'4" he's a little big for the compartment. I've had him as captain, and we do pretty well, but he finds road biking "boring." Plus he has a full time job and is going to school to be a paramedic, so he's a bit busy.

My other son remains local, is a stronger cyclist than his brother, but would require a substantial bribe to get on the back of the tandem again. My remaining hope is the 7 y/o grandson. If he's interested I'd get a kid stoker kit for the daVinci - very easy changeover on this tandem. Meanwhile, my wife and I are enjoying our 100K's with a few centuries mixed in; not really looking for an upgrade at my age
