This was actually a conversion. The caption says:

"What do you do when you have a tandem for 30 years, and you can no longer step over the top tube? If it's a steel frame, have it modified to ride for another 30 years."

What about the poor captain or did the stoker do a trade-in for someone younger? I've gotten in the habit of dismounting by swing my leg over the front bars which reduces the chances of cramping near the end of long rides.

As we have 'aged' (now 78/76) standover room/design on our custom tandems has changed a bit throughg the years.
We now utilize sloping toptube/ladyback design.
Most custom builders (not only R+E) will build what customer specifies.
The first photo is of our 1977 custom Assenmacher tandem (logged 64,000 miles on that one!); the second shot is of our current Zona custom twicer that has 30,000+ miles on the odo.
In between we also had 2 more custom tandems, one by Colin Laing and the other by Co-Motion.
    Nothinbg like a proper fit!
    Pedal on TWOgether!
