Whats a 1990 Burley Duet worth?

I have a friend who offered me a 1990 Burley Duet. The bike is in good shape but has a bent rear rim from a pothole. The wheel is true but you can feel it pulsating when braking. My 7 year old son is almost big enough for it so if the price is fair I might just sit on it for a year until it fits.

I can get it for $400 so any advise would be welcome.

I'd say $400-500 in ready-to-ride condition, maybe a bit less. If it needs a new rear rim, you're looking at a cost of at least $100, probably more. If I were buying it I'd probably offer $300 because of that. But, if it's a friend of yours, you probably might be reticent to offer that.

Sounds like a pretty fair price. I sold one like it for 450 on ebay 2 years ago. I would jump on it, because they don't pop up all that often, especially close by, where you don't have to deal with shipping. Even better if it fits you! They are pretty decent bikes, although it will most likely have obsolete and discontinued SunTour stuff, with 7 speed freewheel-not easy to replace. If you are fortunate to find one with an Arai rear drum brake, and don't need it, you could sell it and recover 1/2 of your investment!!

If it fits you I would buy it in a minute bent rim and all. It sounds like the perfect tandem for your current needs. To often when someone is looking for an older quality tandem like this it seems they often never quite find one on ebay or craigslist when they actually want it or that they can buy with confidence. And when they do, the 'all in' price is not this attractive.
You have a good one at hand, you see the condition..you know the real history. ...If it fits, do the deal. Good luck.

Another huge plus is that it's local. Shipping that bike would cost more than replacing a bent rim.
