The new Calfee frame is at the local Fedex terminal

It is here, Calfee beat their estimated Ready To Ship date by two weeks. I will go pick the frame up in the morning and if all goes well, we will test ride it tomorrow afternoon.

Here is a picture.

As it sits, according to our digital bathroom scale it weighs 30 lbs.

To wet, cold and windy for a shakedown run this afternoon. I did ride it up and down the street several times dialing in the shifting, it feels great!

Purdy bike... congrats!

Seeing a lot of white Calfee tandems of late....

Is 30lbs with pedals & bottle cages or without?

Rear brake cable routing looks familiar; I'm feeling the need for some white cable housing back there. You also don't want the housing to be too tightly wrapped around the frame. Looser = less cable friction and less housing contact with the frame.

I was thinking the same thing, I will get some white housing tomorrow. I am surprised that Calfee has not moved the fixing point on the top tube forward to allow the use of a conventional length piece of housing, did you discuss this with them?

I originally thought it was a unique problem to my frame design spec, i.e, Erickson-based compact frame with steeply sloping top tube, couplers and shallow seat stay angle plus my request to run the brake cable below the centerline of the top tube so we wouldn't brush up against it with our legs.

When I received the frame I looked at the cable stop position on the frame and caliper and realized that I'd have to use the unusual looking but still effective 'round-the-seat tube" cable routing. I sent a photo of it to Craig who had assumed I'd use the Nokon compressionless housing to create a tight S-bend and he was genuinely surprised by my alternative solution. Again, noting that the bike was set up for a disc and that the brake cable stop on the frame was perfectly positioned for the disc, and because my brake cable loop worked just fine, I didn't pursue it.

The lower brake cable run became a standard feature after that and I was somewhat surprised to see another smallish frame without couplers that had the same cable routing issue here on the list... who ultimately ended up using "The Livingood Loop".

To be honest, I never think much about it until I occasionally see another Calfee with the same issue and a looped brake cable: it just looks normal to me when I look at our Calfee since it's been that way going on 2.5 years.

A picture's worth a thousand words....



Like I said, our design spec. was way outside the norm; no way an S-bend would have worked regardless of what type of housing or channel had been used. The loop was my only choice.
