    front-stoker sprocket compatibility/long cable runs

hello, normaly i'm more in the altbike section or freakbike forums, but i'm fooling with a tandem idea and need a bit of advice.

i'm using a ten speed sprocket as my link to the rear wheel and the smaller sprocket i'm using for the stoker has 39 teeth. the closest i have right now for the front is a 40t.

i don't mean for this to be permanent if i get the bike done (the front is from a girls bike and has cute little hearts on it ), but is there any problem with that? on normal tandems is this ever done? i think i have a 36 too if it a smaller front is ever done and/or works better when they don't match. it will also give me more options when i look for a permanent one, because i haven't seen many 39's in my short time looking.

also, i never seem to get long gear cable runs to work well for me. on my stretch cruisers i usually end up making a jockey shift near the rear wheel, but unless i'm going to let the rear rider control the gears i can't do that this time. any hints y'all have that might help me?

    thanks.

They should be the same number of teeth. 39 is road bike double inner.

When you mention freakbike, is this as in Freakbikes and building choppers and other theme built machines.

And most important, someone special that enjoys them with me (except the KTM's)

thanks, yes choppers and various kinda off the beaten path ideas. my favorite are semirecumbent type stretch cruisers.

i know there are tandem lenth cables. what i'm meaning is it seems harder to get good shifting the longer the run gets, and if there are any tricks or tips that help with longer lenths. thanks.
