    Vintage Fiorelli Tandem

Hello fellow tandemers! I typically hang out in the C&V forums, but this may be of more interest here in the Tandem Cycling sub-forum, so here goes: In the Craigslist finds thread here on the C&V forums, there was a Fiorelli tandem that was recently listed. I am curious if anyone on the forums has had a Fiorelli bicycle, and more particularly a Fiorelli tandem. One thing that is going for it from my perspective is that it already has a Sturmey-Archer three speed hub installed.

Thoughts and most especially experiences with Fiorelli tandems are welcome.

Looks like you are ready to add another twicer to your collection.
The only Fiorelli we've seen was a small-wheeled folding tandem.
Offer a bit less as you'll be replacing the rusty chains, among other stuff. . .
    Just our input.

Thanks Rudy and Kay! I've already got a number in mind and it is definitely lower than that asking price. It's funny, but everybody mentions that rusty chain. It seems out of place given the overall condition of the bike. The seller called a short while ago and does not think the bike has been repainted and the chrome appears to be in good condition, so it's a mystery why it looks as it does.

BTW, my bride and I have a few years to go before we come close to the longevity of your marriage, but we're coming up on 25 years now which is a big accomplishment.

Very Cool! Certainly looks like origional paint, with the pinstriping and decals. And the saddles are great. Those old chains just rusted when not preserved, even if stored indoors. Unless bikes of that vintage (as you well know) were premium in quality with Campy components, their chains were from bulk unplated stock. Also, the period lubes were very low tech...generally 3 in 1 oil from a squirt can! It looks very good for a 45+ year old bike, probably painted with enamal, or at best, nitro lacquer. I would keep it origional, the patina is very becoming!
BTW, we are on the cusp of 40 years, a bit more than 1/2 of it on twicers. It only brought us closer (literally)!

As I was digging around the forums, this bike appeared in the same thread in the C&V forums in 2010. In any case there's a picture of it then sitting on the beach so there's no wonder the bike has a rusty chain! In the earlier pictures, the chain doesn't appear to be rusted.

We've only started riding tandems in 2009, so we don't have nearly the saddle time you do, but we really enjoy it a lot. It looks like we'll probably have a difficult time achieving the numbers that zonatandem and you have managed to reach!

Hi I was checking out your posts of the Fiorelli tandem online. I just bought one exactly like yours a month agin and im in the process of fixing it up for the spring. It seems like a really impressive vintage ride that I could not keep my self away from. I like to colorful logos and never saw another black tandem. I bought mine for $250 and project to spend another $150 on parts (new contiential retroride tires in cream and 2 new RPR leather seats from ebay.

The bike looks like it has alot of history it's self with the compilation of parts on it. German chains, Italian lights and frame, USA from wheel hub, English 3 speed. Really a world compiled bike. Anyways, I was hoping that you can give more light on some on going questions I have.

    1. does your campy tensioner make a grinding sound when pedaling? I have clean and reajusted it several times and even when oiled it seems to be making a noise when going over the chain. It is centered in the holder but still makes a noise because of the roller above it.

    2. Did you replace the brake pads? If so with what? I notices they are slightly at an angle and I'm not sure if I can replicate that same angle to meet the rim line.

    3. Are the Witkopp seats original? I had one seat that was a black and white foierlli but it was destroyed and another seat that was older but def. not apart of the bike.

    4. Do you ave any idea of the weight of the bike?

    5. How well does your 3 speed work? Did you need to do any overhauling etc?

    6. when truing the rims are they any different since they are tandem?

    7. Does your bike pump (OMAR brand?) inflate for schrider or presta stems?

    8. Does your frame any any areas of paint that look like dull spots or areas with built up grease?

    9. Would you bike the bike again and what do you think the bike is worth now in good condition?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts/ response. I'm really excited to ride this bad boy in the spring. PM me if that is easier, I cant send private messages because I am new to the sight and did not post 50 times!

    Gavin
