What size panniers for touring

We want to credit card tour on our tandem. We need panniers to carry a change of cloths and shoes and rain gear. I would appreciate recommendations on size and models.

We bought Ortlieb rear pannier. I think they are the Backpacker Plus. Probably bigger than you need but nice quality. We also us a Tubus rack. Got them at The Touring Store. Talk with Wayne as he knows his stuff!

Small panniers + rack trunk.
Carried 22 lbs when credit card touring.
Skipped all sort of 'necessities' (electric shaver, hair dryer, etc.).
Multi use clothing, arm/leg warmers, and no extra shoes; garbage bag with 3 holes (head/arms) can serve as rain gear if needed.
Amazing what you do not need!

A pair of rear panniers normally start at 40 liters volume total, but some models go up to about 60 liters (sorry, no idea what this is in cubic inches). It's certainly possible with one pair of 40 liters for two people, but you'll really have to minimize everything. You won't really know what your needs are until you start giving it a try.

I have a set of Ortlieb Sport-Packer Plus for commuting. They are only 30 liters but with a nice trunk as well, I think we could do mild credit card touring on the tandem. I would HIGHLY recommend Ortlieb though.

We have a set of cheap nashbar panniers, rack trunk, and a seatpost mounted rack (designed to work with panniers). It's enough for 2 people if you pack carefully.

If your touring is just an occassional thing, that setup works fine, and costs around $80 all in.

Just ordered the Ortlieb Packer Plus from Wayne. Thanks for all your help.

We are long-in-the-tooth light/ultra light back packers; so packing on a bike an sleeping in a bed is going to be a luxuary for us.

Am a backpacker too, find bikepacking requires same low weight discipline as backpacking, follow Zona's advice, small with trunk and cut the necessities! or maybe no trunk!
