It's an adventure!
This last weekend my wife & I took a trip out to see her parents. We figured it was a great chance to get in a leisurely country ride. So I mapped out a 30 mile route and we got up early on Saturday to enjoy a ride.
Well, apparently I am pretty citified. Cuz it never occurred to me that not all the roads on the map are paved. As the road state continued to deteriorate, we eventually found ourselves standing on what amounted to a long narrow sandbar in the middle of the river bottoms that was marked as a road on the map. The tandem has 28s on it. So sand isnt exactly the best medium for it. As we walked the bike down this charming country lane we heard a dog in distress. Pretty soon a puppy ambled out of the underbrush. We were in the middle of a nowhere swamp so we figured she was dumped. She looked like hell. She started walking with us. We realized that to leave her behind meant she was coyote bait. So......

Oh yeah, this is the section after the sand. It was so rough that I actually dropped the chain while walking the bike!
Obviously since we were now carrying a pooch, we had to call the ride. Of course we had to take a different route home. It involved a 200 ft climb over 3/10 of a mile. It would have been OK except my stoker was using both hands to hold the puppy who was freaking out about how close the lumber trucks were passing. Ah, good times.
