STR 2012 and Florida Tandem Rally, off-road tandem time too

    Florida October Tandem Events
I know these are both road tandem events, but, there is some very good off-road tandem riding nearby.

The road events, first weekend is the Southern Tandem Rally 2012 (aka STR 2012) in St Augustine Florida.
Second weekend is the Florida Tandem Rally.

Nearby is a trail system call San Felasco. These trails are great on a Tandem MTB. They are about 2 hours away from St Augustine, but an easy diversion on the way to Ocala and the Florida Tandem Rally, hosted by the Panthers Tandem Club.

Assuming you stay the entire week of tandem riding, you cane hit STR, stop by San Felasco, then head south to the Villages for more road riding.

About 20 minutes North of the Villages, in Belleview, is the Santos Trail system. This place is a great tandem off-road location. Some trails are impossible on a tandem, while the other 99% are flowing and relatively flat. We have hundreds of miles and smiles riding this place.

If you are real adventurous, you can go further south to Alafia and Balm Boyette. About 2 hours away from the Villages, these two trail systems will be plenty of technical challenge. Also in a similar area is Croom, like San Felasco, a true XC riding trail.

So if you are heading South in October, consider getting dirty too.

We're doing the St Augustine weekend.

The Panthers weekend the next week seems like questionable timing. Perhaps they're looking for people to make a week of it.

For us, St Augustine is going to be the last of 10 straight weekends of either racing, or business travel, so could be a stretch the next week.

I may have some of this incorrect, but yes, the powers of both STR 2012 and the Florida Tandem Rally discussed dates, schedules(?) and put together a means for those traveling to effectively put together an entire week of riding.

Last year, a couple of teams from the Northeast / Mid Atlantic area brought road and off-road tandems. After Saturdays road ride, Jeanne and I showed them some off-road riding local to where they were staying. The visitors spent an entire week in Florida. Riding both road and off-road many times.

Understandably, 10 weeks flat out is a lot of time away. For us, we will be making it two weekends. STR and then FTR. Work is busy so getting the entire week off won't happen.

I posted this to show other options. As we both know, being Florida residents, you wouldn't have to ride the weekdays in one particular venue. While that may be fun, there is other road riding areas for all skill levels. Possibilities to do an overnight ride. Head to Withlacoochee Trail, visit Claremont, hit the beach, or even ride along the ocean, which if you live away from the coast, is kind of cool seeing the blue water for miles on end. we won't discuss the wind.

Regardless, hope to see you and your stoker in a few weeks.

There are a number of nice options for rides between the 2 events. The rolling hills around Claremount will challenge people's ideas about riding in Florida.

And the whole coast from St Augustine north to Amelia Island is great. Right along the ocean, with all bike lane or residential streets.

Anyone who wants info about around St Augustine, or N Florida in general pm me.
