Squeak . . .SQUEAK . . .
For 3 days in a row riding our tandem develoiped a SQUEAK on each pedal stroke.
When I moved feet around a bit in my toeclips it would mitigate a bit, but soon returned.
Sounded like front pedals needed lubrication . . .
Lubed stoker's pedals too and got back on the twicer next day and . . . 'SQUEAK!' some more!
Swapped to different shoes the following day and noise disappeared!
It's not always what you think it is!
Pedalon!

We have noticed the same thing with our clipless and MTB shoes.

Haven't had that particular squeak, but heaven knows I must have had all the others one time or another. One of our regular ride partners sprays his cleats/soles with silicon lubricant every couple of weeks just for this problem.

Where the shoe strap crosses the upper is often the culprit, and often after the shoe's older and has gotten dry. A little leather conditioner goes a long way, particularly between the underside of the strap and where it rubs the upper.

Squeak . . . SQUEAK . . .
Yeh, it was the shoes that caused the squeaks. No cleats involved as we do toeclips. Had not worn that pair for about 4 months.
Yeah it gets dry in Tucson; will try some leather conditioner/silicone on the straps; or try riding barefoot?!
No artificial hip (yet) . . .
Sueaks/noises can be difficult to trace on a tandem.
Pedal on (squeakless)!

And since you still ride toe clips and straps, don't forget the conditioner on the straps. They'll do it too, particularly my old favorites, the both-sides-finished straps like the Alfredo Binda Extra's.

Dig it! (SEE? It CAN be done! Both a shout out to the "hip" language of the sixties AND an archeology joke all in one)!

I had a shoe squeak as well. Tracked it down to the insole rubbing sole. A little tape on the bottom of insole eliminated to squeak.

At our ages (80/77) we''ve been referred to as 'antiques' . . .
But seeing that we ain't dead yet, we don't qualify for the 'archeological' designation!

I hate it when I hear a new squeak/sound coming from the bike while riding. A couple of weeks ago we were riding when I started hearing a hissing sound like we had a small puncture in the tire. We stopped and I checked the front tire for a puncture. Nothing. The sound had disappeared. We started riding again, and there was the hissing. Again we stopped and checked the tire. Nothing again. About that time, my wife pulled out one of her water bottles and the hissing started again from her bottle. At the last stop she had purchased a soda and placed what she could not drink in her water bottle. Lesson learned.

I like seeing these threads because squeeks also drive me nuts. Actually, even other people's squeeks drive me nuts. There's a guy on the local group ride we see often who has a creak on his bike, and I keep wanting to ask him to do things to try to narrow-down the location of that creak!
