If the freewheel body was to short for an 11sp maybe you could machine the back of the aluminium sprocket carrier to get it to fit. Would also need to check the derailleur to spoke clearance.

Sounds like a great idea. I will have to look but this may work well with Santana wheels since the angle of the spokes is a little greater with the 160mm. This might give just that little extra space.

I have to say, that after a few weeks of riding the DA 9000 groupo, it is SUPER plush, smoothest ever. Precise and easy shifting front and rear, braking is mega powerful with very nice feel. The new front derailleur/shifter stepping takes a little getting used to (half steps down instead of a full slam into the small ring) but that works very nicely. I am using a compact 50/34 at the moment and the shifting between rings is easy and flawless - a huge improvement over previous compact shifting. The chain pickup on the rear cogs is excellent in both directions with near zero hesitation.
For current tandem options, if you had very clean cable runs and only needed a double chainring setup, getting the 11spd DA groupo without the crankset (can still use 10spd cranks) would be super nice. To get a triple chainring setup, you'd need to mix an old left triple shifter with a new 11sp right shifter. Nashbar has a great sale on 9000 components right now, though I picked up my groupo from Planet Cyclery for a bit less than what he is selling now (still the best groupo deal around by a couple hundred $).

Interesting. For "tandem specific" hubs I'm not aware of any upgrade kits, yet. Single bike versions, yes, Chris King R45 hub, DT Swiss, White Ind., etc.

DA (CS-9000) 11x25, plus a 11x23 coming from Nashbar.
Also have a 36T inner chainring (only $45) on backorder to have the option of a 50/36 "cross" combo. This should be a closer match to the standard 14T chainring spacing of a 53/39 that I am used to.
