So the thread about getting a second cheap tandem made me think about a triplet or a quad. I was considering using a modification of Sheldon Brown's system, and buying two inexpensive tandems to get the parts together, and then cutting them up and reassembling them (it would be a more extensive cut-up than Sheldon's system, since I'd want to put the smaller sections at the end, and the larger sections at the front).

Unfortunately, I just missed my own $100 tandem deal here, so I'll have to start hoarding tandems later.

I figure that inexpensive tandem frames aren't going to have 145 or 160mm dropout spacing, so I'm most likely going to get the 135mm MTB standard. Since I'm not going to use the bike for more than an occasional fun ride with the family (OB Christmas Parade, maybe Bike around the Bay), I don't need 27 speeds. In order to get a dishless wheel, I was thinking about an IGH. I'm partial to Sturmey-Archer 5-speeds, but they said they don't have anything tandem-rated. Then I saw the NuVinci 360.

Anone have any experience with one of those on a tandem? Any opinions about IGH as a way to maximize strength on a 135mm width?

Dang, $1k for that CL triplet! Someone should jump on that. Parts alone are worth the price. Looks like one of the old "Chuck's Bikes" triplet frames (which were a killer value and decently regarded).

Wow, it sure is. I'm not sure I have $1000 in the budget right now for a bike I won't need for a couple years (the advantage of collecting parts and putting it together). But I might have to revisit it.
