Sadly, Another Tandem Hit-and-Run

A mid-twenties tandem team was hit and left for dead on the side of the Clearwater Beach Causeway in the pre-dawn hours of Monday morning. They were found some unknown amount of time after the crash, alive, but one in serious and one in critical condition.

http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/story/2...ke-hit-and-run It appears that the captain didn't make it. This really hits home as they are close to the same age as my wife and I. We ride early in the morning or at night all the time using lights. It sickens me that someone would run these people over and not check to ensure everyone was ok. In this day and age where you can read comments on any bicycle related story indicating people would run cyclists over for the most minor things, it raises questions. I am sorry for the family's loss and hope the stoker fully recovers. I also hope the culprit is caught and the book is thrown at him/her. Real sad, the couple was just starting to enjoy the tandem experience. (I apologize in advance for spelling/grammatical errors. It is not ideal responding via cell phone.)

As it does with Maggi and I. We rode that causeway a thousand times in the 10 years we lived in Clearwater. It's part of what is known locally as the "three bridges ride" that passes right in front of Ride and Roll Cyclery, where the captain apparently worked.

We're absolutely sickened by it.

This is absolutely horrible. The person who hit them should have the book thrown at them.

Here is the latest Strava upload from the late captain, Rob Lemon, August 12th.

This was done on a Strava iPhone app. If Rob Lemon had his Strava app going on his iPhone at the time of the accident, it could provide a lot of evidence, that the Police may not necessarily know about.

Morning Ride
Ridden by Rob Lemon on Monday, 08/12/2013

Hilary Michalak also used a Strava iPhone app, so the chances are greater than one of them had their Strava app recording the ride.

An arrest was made. Would be willing to bet the driver was likely intoxicated. http://www.wtsp.com/news/article/333...t--run-suspect

Here's a link to another local story. Apparently subscribing to the Chappaquiddick Theorem that states "The sooner and in more detail you announce the bad news, the higher the likelihood you won't be held accountable", the driver went to the Clearwater Police and told them he "thought" his vehicle "might" have been involved in the crash. Already setting up his defense in the case, he says he blacked out after work Sunday, (from unknown origins), and didn't come to until Monday afternoon.

Really? Didn't know he'd done anything wrong? Then where did his windshield go?

Fortunately, it's a fairly heavy book in Florida. DUI Manslaughter is a second degree felony punishable by up to 15 years imprisonment. Leaving the scene of an accident causing death is a first degree felony, punsihable by up to 30 years imprisonment.

The Florida leaving the scene statute gets this right in that Leaving the scene is punished more harshly than DUI. Hence, the incentive is to not flee the scene, and you can't reduce your punsihement by leaving, and avoiding detection until your BAC has dropped.

http://www.tampabay.com/news/publics...etails/2139945 Sounds like the family is a bunch of winners. I sent an email to the bike shop where Mr. Lemon worked to see if they have information regarding where to send donations and/or if they will be doing a fund-raising ride for the families (per a prior news report). If I receive a response, I will update this thread with the information should anyone else be interested.

Very sad and scary since we ride early in the morning during the summer. It looks like the truck was going quite a bit faster than the bike when it ran into them.

Personally I cut the mother some slack for not being objective. No matter what type of person she is that's a parent's nightmare. Rather than the low hanging emotional fruit of her interview I would have liked the paper to spend some time reporting on the incident. Maybe interviewing coworkers about his condition when he left work. How many hours had he worked? When did his shift end? Did he work all night and leave directly after his shift or did he go have a few cold ones with his buddies? I guess it is easier to just drive over the the mom's house and ask how she feels about her son killing someone.

An update on this story ..... In a nutshell, the driver is still in jail for leaving the scene with fatal injuries, he works for a restaurant and bar on Clearwater Beach, and was apparently tipping quite a few with his supervisor between closing and 5:45 AM, (the accident happened at about 6 AM.) The bar is being sued also for serving a habitual alcoholic.

Now that we are pulling a trailer with the golden child in it I am much more worried about getting taken out from behind. We are running blinky lights during the day as well.
